forged or hyper?

Hyper pistons do have some qualities like the heat cycles and tighter clearances, and even though there are plenty of guys making power with them, for my money i wouldn't waste my time, for a few reasons..

1, because i KNOW if i build an engine, i'll never be satisfied and eventually i WILL get juice or forced induction, and since my wallet won't allow me to rebuild an engine and swap pistons, i'm gonna do it how i consider "right" the first time, and if my budget won't allow it then i'll just have to save up. It's ghetto but most speed shops do have lay-a-way....a buddy of mine is picking up Vic. Jr. heads tuesday that he got that way...

2, The fact that hypers don't expand and contract...even though that gives tighter clearances and may not burn oil, that same fact means that they don't have any "give" and when they come to their limits, they peal like onions. Also that bit about better ring sealing because of heat cycles....well if you have good quality forged pistons, once they heat up they'll seal just as tight.

Now i do agree that high dollar internals in a stock block is kinda backwards thinking, but every build has a weak link somewhere. Right now the new Z06s are blowing pistons to hell and back, and if you ask me it's because they're hypers. I'm not saying forged pistons don't blow but you don't see Pro Stock cars running 200mph running hyper pistons.

I am about to start rebuilding my motor and are unsure which pistons I should order.

the motor is going to be n/a, with trickflow heads,b-cam, and most of the usual bolt ons.

wat do you guys think. and its goin to be a daily driver

There`s better OTS cams available than that outdated pos B cam.
Look at the Trick Flow stage 1 cam or Comp Cams XE series.

If a Hyper Piston does give up it will shatter into a million pieces and take out most of the Engine. They built a budget 5.0 in Hot Rod Magazine and used Hypers in a kit and the Engine let go (prior to disassembly they thought the piston swelled and got stuck at the top off the bore and then the rod tore out of it) The problem was an Exhaust valve that made contact with it, needless to say it fractured into thousands of pieces and destroyed pretty much the entire engine, they said had they used Forged Pistons it the exhaust valve would have just knocked a hole in the piston and not wiped out everything.

Yep that's exactly my point. Hypers are VERY hard pistons and because of that, when they go, they break apart like a sand castle because they're so brittle. My buddy has a 347 with Keith Black hypers in it, and he's running 10.5:1 and it's pretty badass, but i couldn't stand the thought of low limited he is with that engine now...no boost, no juice....I mean, for my money if i could have it ALL, i'd have gobs of power ALL MOTOR and screw the power adders, but that's not always possible and still be streetable like you can be with a power adder.

Basically it all comes down to capability to me, and hyper pistons limit you in the areas that make the most power. Budget or no budget, i personally wouldn't settle. And believe me...i know how it sucks to be on a budget...look at my car! The doors are rotting off and it's primered! But i won't settle for crappy pistons!

Forged is the Safest Approach!

I've seen alot of broken stock block's and none had any useful parts when it was done.

So if a piston goes, it will likely take the block and crank with it. Even if they aren't completely broken, it will likely cost more to fix than just buying a new setup.

I bought my KB hypers for my 331 for 200 bucks brand new. They are VERY light, and very nice, for the money it was a steal. I am staying NA, and my 331 is just going to be a fairly badarsed DD, so i can buy a 4 banger notch as project. My pistons are lighter, and seal better, and will probably make more hp than a forged slug would in my application. so i say it all depends on the combo....

The Block Survived the Shattered Hyper Piston in Hot Rod. That Damn Piston wiped out just about everything else though, there were even pieces in the Exhaust System! If you have Hypers you better hope you dont drop a Valve!

My forged pistons came in contact with a exhaust valve due to the fact that the timing chain came off and i tryed to roll start the car. Put a dent in my piston. I think 3 or 4 valves were damaged and needed replacement. The pistons were fine. I'm glad it wasn't a hyper piston that came in contact because i believe i would have had to start rebuilding after that incident.

ok well that solves that problem...im going with forged.

now i finally said (a choice word) it im going all out 347 stroker....

Now would it be cheaper to buy a kit or to get everything i need individually??

What kind of prices am i looking at for either route i decide?
