Well its not new, but it seems to be one of those forgotton mods.
Weight reduction.
When I was in high school, then a young military man on a budget, one of the ways we looked to make our cars go faster was to reduce unnecessry weight.
It seems like with the invention of the net and ebay, everyone looks for things to bolt on thier cars to add weight.
More weight means more power to move it.
Some of the things we did were: mini-spares, common now, uncommon then. Remove 1 horn, lighter battery, 1/4-1/2 tank fuel, remove back seat, remove insulation, remove a/c, remove console, aluminum intake, bare bones sound system, remove excess trim, no windshield washer, no coolant overflow tank,
I had a 69 Dart GTS, I removed over 200 lbs from that car, and you couldnt even tell. Alot of that was glass bumpers and an aluminum intake. I could sure feel a difference off the line.
I bet alot of new Mustangs have close to 200 lbs added weight on them.
I didnt get a shaker or spoiler. I added dual exhaust and sway bars. No more additional weight for me unless it makes the car go faster.
I also had a 63 Falcon with a 200 six and a 3 speed. I gutted everything out of that car that didnt compromise safety.
The door panels were posterboard. No carpet, no headliner, no rear window regulators, no package tray, no heater, no radio, no ps, pb, ac, no spare, no jack, no ashtray. Nothing but a drivers seat and 2 seatbelts. I had studs and wingnuts so I could put the passenger seat in when I needed it.
The 200 had 10:1 cr, 3 carbs, reved to 7k and stoplight to stoplight could stay pretty even with most small blocks.
I never weighed the car, but I bet thier want much on the road that was lighter.
Anyway, my point/question?
Why is everyone adding tons of unnecessary weight to thier car? Then looking for ways to make it faster.
Cant have both, unless you have to much money and not enough sense.
