Friend destroyed rear end why?

My buddy has an 02 GT with a little over 60K miles on it. He has to been to the track maybe 10 times with those of those times making 2 or 3 passes on slicks. He had Motive 4.10 gears. He had just bought some Nitto 555R DR's. He said he did a quick burnout then launched it at 2800 and pretty much destroyed his entire rear end. Everything in the pumpkin was destroyed, half shafts, gears just shattered, there was axle housing damage. There was no gear whine he said, so he thinks the install of the gears was not the problem. I thought the 8.8's were suppose to hold up easily against something like this. Any idea why he might have just obliterated his rear end?

4.10s + slicks on stock axels = rearend death.

You can not run 4.10s and slicks on a stock rear end, thats just stupid as your rear end is on borrowed time then. And i guess his time just ran out. I guess his use of the slicks weakend his diff enough that when he made that last pass the Drag Radials were enough to snap it.

IDK like I said he only made 2-3 passes with the slicks. Its not like it was just his axles that went either it was the entire rear end.

Halfshafts? is it an IRS conversion GT?
Anyways. if an axle breaks it can take alot more out with it when it goes.
IMO I've been pushing my own luck with 4.10's, ET streets, and 3700rpm, nitrous launches, but it's held up.

Also some believe the DR's are stiffer thereby transferring more shock and load to the rearend than a wrinkle wall tire would. I don't know and have seen no proof to back that up either.

it happens and i see it on drag radials a lot on a prepped track. there very well could have been a problem with the gear install as well.

i ran my 01 on slicks for well over 100passes and the rear finally gave out. mine broke when i hit 3rd though. the carrier pin cracked and then proceeded to shread my diff and ring and pinion. if you dont have a locker or a spool it can easily happen. auburns, eatons, 31spline t locs, they all break. its part of racing, if you are on a budget learn how to fix the **** yourself and keep some stock **** laying around and get AAA gold

id like to see some pics of shattered gears....sounds like drama to me or a ****ty install

an axle girdle and stud kit would help out alot. I use to launch my 1996 Gt at 5k on Nytrous, on slicks wth a stock diff and stock axles, for over 2 years wth NO failures and running 12.30's@109mph. at same time I had a friend wth a stock 1998 Gt, just bolt-ons and a "DOT" tire broke 3 axles in a little over a month, running 13.90's @100mph. so in saying that, I believe the girdle & stud kit made a big difference. also when doing a gear change, get ALL new bearings and races, dont cut corners.

:stupid:

Your buddy was asking for it by not upgrading the rear and running slicks.

Randy Stinchcomb can hook you up with a trac lok 31 spline and 31 spline ford racing axles .....give him shout under the parts section on modulardepot.com ...... as for the rear end breaking , it was the drag radials and a sticky track , that combo will hurt more than a slick if it dead hooks because the tire doesnt absorb any of the shock , the guts of the rearend do , usually the axles give way first though ....

You can break the rear end with nothing more than slicks, so I've heard.

Usual upgrade is 31 spine axles, and posi. You can get a used explorer one off ebay for cheap, and randy from modular depot might be able to get you frpp axles.

Shouldn't break the bank, its a lot cheaper than new moser?strange?auburn stuff.

28 spline stuff, don't think about it, unless your friend wants to be in the same position he's in now.

what about Mark Williams axles? i've heard of people switching to them after snapping Mosers, Strange, etc. and not having any problems. of course most of those cars have higher than stock hp/tq though.

Noob question: With 4.10s and regular street tires do you have to worry about the rear end in that case?
need your diff of regular street tires. If you mean factory issue Goodyear's doubt it all they want to do is blow off, :) if you mean Nitto 555r's then it might, if you mean MT Et's real good chance.
I wish I had just waited and done the rearend right when I did gears, at least a 31spline, tlok (with extra clutches), and Moser axles, and c-clip elim. Now I gotta tear it all down and put that stuff in. :(
