this mechanic told me i need to buy a install kit for a hundred bucks when i install frpp gears. i told him it comes with shims and he said that he also needs the seals etc. my car only has 6000 miles on it. what do you guys think? he said it will make it alot easier for him. he also said it would take him 6 or seven hours to do it costing me 600-700 bucks total. sounds like horse**** to me.

If they know that they're doing...4.5 hours tops. Shouldn't take any longer than that. And for your seals, I would just go ahead and replace them...why not? If you don't, that 6000 miles is going to come back and bite you in the arse. JMO

I had around 19K on my rearend when I put in 3.73s (now 19.7K)...didnt replace ANYTHING, dont need the shims either...just keep the stock shim behind the bearing on the pinion. No noise either and just as tight as stock. All you need to do is swap the spacers that line up the carrier and keep it tight...put the left one on the right and visa versa..its very easy to install gears (besides beating the pinion out of the housing..takes some work, and need a 2LB+ hammer...also remember to screw the nut back on the pinion before you beat on it).You should do it yourself...otherwise it shouldnt cost no more than $200-300.

im doing the same swap may sometime, and id say replace everything. my car only has 9200 miles also. im not 100% sure yet on what exact kit to get, but you will want one that will replace the bearings.

the price he quated you is way too high.

Ratech

I would go ahead and get the kit because it may save you in the long run. I got the install kit from Ratech. I'd shop around for the gear swap though. I'm paying $225 to get mine installed Monday, so if he said $600+ that is a bunch of bs!

the shop I got mine done at installed my installation kit, gears, and replaced all my clutch packs in my trac-loc in about 2 1/2 hours. it came to a total of $290 for labor, and oil. I would call around and get some quotes from other shops. I've seen a lot of mechanics screw people on gear installs. If you want to buy a installation kit you can buy one that just includes the seals and bolts. so you wont have to pay for new bearings. gefracing.com sells one for 38.50 here's a link to it
