So I am replacing the fuel tank on my 92 5.0 and pulled the old fuel float out, cleaned it up and ran into a question. The float itself, the little black foam on the end of the swing arm, has a couple wear spots where the actual steel rod that it resides on has cut grooves into it. To me it looks like there should be something more than just the bent wire holding it on and perhaps a washer or something to protect the edges on it from the wire. Perhaps I am overthinking/overengineering it? Also should the actual float be able to swivel around freely? Seems like it should be stationary on the swing arm wire . First time I have ever pulled one so I am clueless. Help?

If it still floats and stays in the holder, I'd say you're good...

ah ok...well if you already have known issues with the assembly, just replace it and be done.

assembly is in good shape, just the actual float. hate to spend 90 bucks on something for a simple float that needs replaced. wonder if the actual float can be interchanged with another one?

You're just way overthinking things.

Here's a brand new one. It ain't very complicated.

What I'm saying is that the float is a solid block. Any wear on it isn't of a consequence at all.
