Functional hoods, need some advice (and explanation)

Hey everyone,

So I've got the itch to do one of my first larger mods on my car ('06 black gt). I've got 20" rims (with painted red calipers - as an aside does anyone know where you can buy powder coated calipers, I'm having a heck of a time finding a shop that will coat mine in my area and the paint keeps peeling off even though it's the duplicolor caliper kit), and will be putting on the Saleen HID kit soon.

I think I'd like to get a new hood, but I'd prefer to have one that is actually functional, anyone have any advice? Is the Saleen functional? I spoke with someone at Shelby who said that their's isn't functional but that you can easily cut out the vents to make it functional). That being said I got a little confused as to what 'functional' really means. Does it just mean it has a hole in all the way through to allow for better venting? How does a cowl induction system/hood work, I looked at steeda's website but can't get a full grasp on how it works - seems like they have a race and street version.

If I did add a new hood other than for aesthetics is there any real performance gain (would it be mostly from the decreased weight with a fiberglass/CF hood)?

Sorry for the long post, if anyone has any answers or advice its always appreciated :)

Matt

Have you considered the CDC shaker system? It is functional as it is considered ram air. You use your existing hood but the shaker really looks good. I have it on my 05 Sonic Blue GT along with a black hood stripe and have had countless number of people asking about it. The HP gains aren't much but it really make the car look great. The system costs $800 but you can put it on yourself in about 2 -3 hors.

Just read an article about the Shelby Mustang in a UK journal wherein it says that the development of the Shelby took lessons from the FR500. Basically what the race team found was that without the vents, high pressure builds up under the bonnet and eventually the bonnet will fly off. I've noticed on my S/C Mustang that the hood moves at high speed and venting it is on my list of things to do.

I wouldn't count on the vents to help prevent the hood from becoming airborne. I'm sure it helps, but I'd rather have a good set of hood pins.

Back on topic. There are several types of functional hoods. One type is the CDC Shaker which just has a hole for the shaker to poke thru. Air goes into the shaker which is exposed on top of the hood. The other types of functional hoods have vents that allows air flow to under the hood.

Then, there are functional side scoops. Those allow air to cool off the braking system. Those are reaaal nice (especially if you have a really expensive set of Brembos).

Just curious what would you suggest for the functional side scoops? Who makes them (and speaking of the brembo brakes etc. does anyone know where I could get a set of calipers that are already painted/powder coated, not sure if I want to spend the $$$ on a whole new set of brakes).

Can anyone explain the workings of cowl induction hoods?

HEY PDX,
I'm with you...I like the GTR ram air, but I won't get my stang for another 6-8 wks (hopefully). I'm gonna keep my eye on you to see how you like the hood, so let us know when you get it.
My understanding is that after 05, they went with steel hoods and NOT aluminum. read the instructions for the CDC shaker install and they mention it also.

Check out maier racing they have an awesome functional hood that looks like the 67 shelby, and you can get one with louvers to vent pressure. I want to get the one with lovers and run the nitrous purge line to it. If you want pice go to mustang depot and look. They are out of stock because Maier is making them on a you call then we build basis. I'm getting one soon, windveil blue with white racing stripes what do ya think?
