Fox Galled wheel stud threads

Can anyone tell me why my 1/2”-20 die out of my tap and die set will not work on my wheel studs. They won’t thread onto a good stud with out ruining the treads. Should I buy one that is specifically for wheel studs? It’s an 89, 8.8, 4 lug, 1/2”-20 studs. Thanks in advance.

I would not repair wheel studs. Id pound them out and install a new one.
