I have an automatic and I understand you have to recalibrate the computer when you put in new rear end gears which can be expensive. I was wondering if you can drive without recalibrating, or would that mess something up? It would probably be a bit before I baught a Diablosport predator or something like it.

Bingo! He said it. A lot of guys cheap out on a speed cal, but just think if your car piles on 20% more miles. With an auto it is really a must. Speed cals are less than $100 or get a chip/programmer.
www.mustangtuning is starting to deal with SCT. Call them to see what a chip will cost. They are usually very resonable. A chip is a nice mod with an auto because you can change your shift points and firm up your shifts plus gain about 10 hp. So, say the chip is $200, you are gonna have to drop $100 on a speed cal anyway and you get the other benefits.

I thought you couldn't use a speed cal for an automatic? I might be wrong though, just thought I heard that somewhere. Also without reprogramming for the gears you will bounce off the rev limiter when you stomp on it. My buddy did that for awhile, and now he has a chip and it's a totally different beast with the shift points changed.

Speed Cals dont work for a Auto...you have to get a programmer, i would get a preditor and set your shift points and rev lim and all that stuff along with fixing your speed and stuff.
yea i just put 4.30s in my car with the auto, and the miles rack up FAST.. also it looks like youre going a lot faster than you are (speedo).. i had my 96 GT over 150 mph according to the speedo last night.. and it definately isnt that fast hahahah

yes and no.. you dont have to for the car to run fine, but if you want your speedo to be correct then yes.. but keep in mind that 300 bucks youre spending on a chip is not ONLY to calibrate for gears, it also changes your shiftpoints, firmness, stall, calibrates for exaust mods, bumps timing, chainges airfuel... etc they are worth the money forsure

I can't get it up......ok that didn't sound right.
If you're going to bother with changing out the gears, I'de tell you to go ahead and get something to flash or program your ecu so you don't have to worry about your speedo being off or your shifts being off. When EEC Doc put my parts in over this past weekend, he built me a custom program with his sct tuning software and it worked great. It corrected the speedo and the shifts seem fine. I'm still yet to floor it as I'm breaking in these 4.30's and other differential parts we put in but once the break in is done, well, you know what I'm gonna do.
