Getting a small whiff of Gas smell in car..what to do ?

It smells like gas in the car when I am driving and the car is up to temp. Its not real strong, but I do smell it. I am still breaking in my engine, and I have not fine tune the carb as of yet. Is this from the carb ? is the mixture to rich ? can I adjust something now, or just wait for my dyno run to adjust and fine tune ?

Check all connectors and rubber hoses, correct as needed.
Is there a gas smell in the oil >> fuel pump diaphram, replace fuel pump
Check the condition of plugs > black = rich
What kind of carb? Go to manufacture's site for tuning instructions.

Hmm ok. I will pull some plugs and see what they look like. The carb is a holley street avenger 670. All of the plugs have their rubber tips on, the ones I am not using that is. I'll check the other things you mention as well.

Once you have eliminated other things I would go ahead and do the best I could to tune the carb before going to the dyno. If you do not have the manual for your carb, you can down load it at

There is a bunch more information on the net, apparently getting optimum performance from a Holley is a hot topic. I'm pretty much pegged out on helping on this, my Edelbrock has limited my need to learn about fine tuning carbs!

I had a gas smell in my '67 coupe that turned out to be a brittle and slightly leaky tank-to-filler cap hose (leaking into the trunk...that's good for peace of mind). Couldn't see the cracks until I removed it, but replacing it cured the smell.

Gas fumes in the trunk could become interesting with a trunkmounted battery and fuse box. But if the smell is very slight and the leaks are ruled out I'd just breath deep and enjoy it.

Personally I enjoy the smells of a classic car...
Some oil, some gas, some hot metal mixed with some molten rubber...mmmmmmmmm!

New ones are just too sanitary

Found it. Had a small leak..replace and all good. Pulled my plugs and had a nice tan color She is running strong. Pickup is very nice as well. I say next week I can goto the dyno and she what's what. Stay tune...
