hey guys just wanted to see the opinions on 4.10's with the 5speed. might juice it to a 75 shot and people are telling me i wont be able to shift fast enough or get ever get traction????:shrug: its going to be a cruiser and might have to serve as a DD in an emergency of the other car going out but i doubt it......also im going to run 17x9 cobra wheels not some big ol traction hungry wheels

I had a buddy that went 4.10s and spray. The car hardly ever got driven, so after he did the swap I never got to hear his opinion on it before I moved away. I think 1st gear would probably be useless, and cruising on the highway would be out of the question. My car has 3.73s, and I almost wish I would have done 3.55s.

Just add slicks and learn to shift faster :evil:

I can't get enough, although it doesn't hook for **** on the street. I'm only doing the 3:73s for when I add boost and want to stay out of 5th at the track.

with a stock t5, it really is a bit too much gear for driving around on the street. with one of the aftermarket 2.95 first t5's i doubt it would be so bad. if i had to do it over again (and knew i was going 5speed, i put mine in while i was still aod) id go with a 3.73 or even a 3.55

Brothers low 12 second car has 4.10s and a stock cam... 1st through 2nd is a waste on the street spins into 3rd, but the revs arent too bad. He also has quiet mufflers and soft suspension which might aid in not noticing the higher revs. If we tossed spray on the car it would need a taller tire at the track, and be more useless in the lower gears on the street.

I think 3.73s work well, 3.90s are a compromise b/w the two also.

Frankenstang's notch has 4.10's with a T-5. First gear is REALLY short, as mentioned above. When I took it to the track (back when I owned it), I actually ran out of gear in 4th and was a hair away from hitting the rev limiter before I hit the traps - this is on a stock long block car running street tires. The 3.73's in Frankenstang's Capri, which is set up almost exactly the same as the notch, make it feel WAY more "right" with a T-5. First gear is brief, but not worthless, and it's a perfect compromise between added an added fun factor on the street and a worthwhile upgrade for the track. :nice:

If you had an AOD, I'd still suggest 3.73's because hey ... there's always the chance you'll wanna swap to a T-5 in the future, no sense in doing the gears twice. :D

i have a t-5, modded motor gt40 top end......
so basically the 4.10's you think it would be a waste!
i was in the car w/ the 4.10 rear end i'm trying to get and the guy was hitting the rev limiter in like no time.....which i guess made the car feel like it had no time to move, it was just like 1st gear -redline 2nd-redline,and thats it...it didn't seemed like it moved as much as a stock 3.27'd t-5 stang shouldve have....
this is the article that talked me into it!

Rule of Thumb,
5spd = 3.55's
AOD = 3.73's

Around here the rule of thumb is 5 speed = 3.73 and AOD = 4.10. Then again if you ask any of the drag racers around here, even the ones who street their car, they'll tell you the small sacrifice you make on the street is more than worth it at the track when you go with 4.10s.

Ive had 4.10's in every mustang ive owned. A 95 aod with 150 shot, i 98 5 speed with a 150 shot, and my current fox with with a tko and a 347. I thought they were perfect for me, and i suck at driving lol. I always had fun driving my car.

yah im gonna do it.......the car is going to be a cruiser, and what makes you think a freshened up 302 can do 3k crusining..... the car is not for gas mileage...check my sig.... my civic just got 32mpg all city and A?C ice cold!!!!!!!

I'm also running the 2.95 first. If you take off normal driving. You make it about ten feet in first before you have to shift in to 2nd.:notnice:

Thats why i start off in 2nd.

I have 4:10s first is short but if u like shifting like i do its alot of fun i use mine only for street and lately ive been doing alot of highway driving at 65mph im at 2500rpm soo its not too bad.. although if i were to do it agian i would probably go with 3:73' s I wouldnt mind a higher top end hehe damn 6speed corvettes :canada:

:eek: What were you trapping? I run a 26" (25.7 I think) tall tire and with 3.73s trapped 109.27 and was nowhere near the rev limiter. My brothers car with a 26" tire and 4.10s has been 110 in the 1/4 and the shift lite set for 6000 had just come on. You must have been moving or have a really short tire to be at 6250 at the end of the track...

Same here, 89CobraGT. I love the way the car sounds as I row through those short gears. I actually went from a 3.73 that I ran for years until the hci went in. With the powerband shifted up a bit I didn't like the way it felt on the street. A guy I knew with a 4.10 was looking to step down so it was an even swap. Imo, the 4.10 is perfect for my combo. Also, I love the way it pulls 5th gear. Granted, even when the car was my daily I wasn't too concerned with the slight increase in freeway rpms.

My AOD has a 3.73. It wasn't an easy decision but this car is a cruiser first so I was willing to sacrifice a little performance. Going from the stock 2.73 to a 3.73 and shift kit woke it up plenty (although it's still a dog off the line due to the stock stall).
