I'm going to look for a fan and some pullies from a taurus. What year should I be looking for, for compatible parts?

You can get a dual fan setup from a Dodge Dynasty. It's a two wire system and should fit. I have an aluminium radiator and the fans fit well. Measure the width of your radiator to be sure. Height is not an issue.

What on God's green earth is a Dodge Dyanasty? I am looking to upgrade to electric too, but I wouldn't know what to look for.

Rerun, i would caution you to make sure that whatever you choose, it flows enough CFM's - South Bay is not the coldest place on the planet. you need good cooling.
any fan from a 3.8L taurus should work.

if you come across a mark 8, hoorah. ditto for a SN95 fan. these are all units that were made for 5.0's (i dont know that the taurus fan was ever used for V8's, but it has been proven adequate from people in here).

do you have a 3G alternator? the taurus fan sips juice pretty nice, if you are careful about what accessories are being run (Jerry Beach runs one on his 2G, but he says it is not the greatest set up. in FL he also only uses low speed).

my two cents. good luck.

Hey, what's up HISSIN, knew I could count on you. Yeah, I fixed my charging problem, bought a new battery and another 3G, only to find out that my ignition wire to the alternator was severed somewhere. Fixed that, charging was fine, kind of sucks but you live and learn.

The current fan I have is wired to ignition and is running all the time, the problem is that it really doesn't cover all that much of my radiator; just the center really. I'll keep my eye out for the Mark VIII, else I'm going to take my chances with the taurus fan.

I'm also looking for a set of stock sized pullies to dump these underdrives I have, will the pullies off the taurus that I'm pulling the fan off of work? Anyone have any words of thought on that?

sounds like a plan - im glad to hear that you got the charging system figured out, after all the headaches.
dont feel bad about the wiring gremlins - they can make one insane!

im not much help - i have no idea what stuff on a 3.8L taurus will work WELL for you. a lot of parts can probably be swapped on, but since they are from a smaller motor, i dont know how well they work.
for pullies, i would really try to find a fox or 94-95 stang (or explorer, etc that used similar/same components). i think you can get some pullies from places like Napa too - in case you need to do that.

ive never (and never will) tried U/D pullies, so im not the one to ask.

BTW, with your alt, you should be able to run the 3.8 taurus fan on high speed, which should cool pretty well. i still like the idea of a 94-95 fan (or mark 8), myself (it is excruciatingly hot where i live).

i would also install a controller and a manual switch for the new fan setup.
as im sure you know, www.dccontrol.com
has some real nice stuff (from what ive read - Michael Tom and Ryde On cant be wrong), but they are $$. a manual switch is always a great idea (i put them on oem elec set ups for when the fan switch fails).

good luck and happy hunting.
oh yeah, here is a list from Jrichker of other parts you might keep an eye peeled for, if you need them.

good luck at the J/Y.!

Well, just got back from the junkyard. I picked up a new fan, found a taurus station wagon and pulled the fan. Little did I know the one I pulled is a Ford 8C607 aka Mark VIII fan, not bad for 10 bucks! Anyhow, I'm going to buy some pullies from a guy off stangnet, and slap all this in. Any good docs on installing this fan? I just want it to run off the ignition like the one i currently have.

I have a 3G, so I don't think it'll be a problem.

Thoughts? Thanks,

Justin.

You'll probably have to trim the shroud to make it thinner to clear the pump pulley - but first move your radiator forward as much as possible by reversing the rubber mounts and bending their holders some - you'll see when you study it.

I'm buying stock pullies, because my underdrives are really ****ing with my system. So you're saying I'll have clearance issues with the fan and stock pullies?

No, I was trying to warn you off using the 94-95 stang pulleys because they wont fit

Couple of questions. Since I want the fan to be running all the time after I start the car, can I just cut out the fan controller and use a 75 amp relay? I'm still not 100% clear on what a relay does in itself, but I can probably wing it. If I can just use the relay what's the easiest way to wire it up? Is it a bad idea to use just the relay w/o the fan controller? etc.

Thanks

Well, Im positive someone could give you a better explanation but here goes....

You dont want the fan on all of the time. The primitive on/off switch is a bad idea as well.

Your best option is to get a controller like the one Hissin' suggested. Visit the site to see how it works! Im getting it when I install my Mark8.

i agree with Matt (BTW, thanks for the pulley info - i did not know 94- 95 pullies would not work. i figured a 5.0 in a stang is a 5.0 in a stang. thanks for setting me straight).

i agree that the relay is absolutely necessary with that fan. it can draw over 100 amps at start up!!

i would contact Dccontrol (Brian is the guy to talk to, IIRC) and confirm the controller can handle the juice of that fan, if you want to run that controller.

it seems like a nice idea, as some people have had trouble with relays latching (even 75 ampers).

BTW, think of a relay as a switch. it allows you to use a dinkymanual toggle type switch and wiring as a means to switch the relay on. the relay is connected to the battery, and is very close (normally) to the fan motor. so you dont have long streams of heavy duty wiring running all over. let alone that many switches cant handle the high power draw of a Mark 8.

so definately use a relay. i would also use a controller - you might be able to get a cheap controller to work, with some ingenuity. and i would not run the fan all the time - it will take a toll on the charging system and the fan motor, unnecessarily.

there are some decent fan write ups (Jrichker has a post with several links). i have some saved somewhere also, if all else fails.
good luck, Justin.

Im glad I knew something you didnt Hissin'! I guess that means Im living up to my intellegence for once

So now I have a question.. I need a relay even though I would have a Dccontroller?
Is that what youre saying? What would I need for my Mark fan when I install it?

Hi guys, don't mean to butt in but don't forget circuit protection. I had a fuse holder and wire melt down on my fan a couple of months ago. I have since switched to a 32 amp magnetic circuit breaker with screw lug terminals.
On reflection I should have used 8 gauge on the fan run. I used the supplied 12 gauge...which now makes me worry.
