GT500 Spoiler Install help

Hey Everyone,


got my GT500 spoiler (replica) in looks like a million bucks but unfortunately during the install I screwed up the alignment part (read hand slipped) so it stuck to the trunk off.

Of course I blew a headgasket in the process. The gap is small but enough that the screw won't go in and thread ( i hope i didn't strip the threads in the process). I'm a bit of a perfectionist. Running your finger between the trunk and the spoiler you can feel the gap widens but my GF tells me she can't even notice.

What should I do? file the trunk hole so that it lines up and call it a day or can you suggest something else?

It got dark in the end that didn't help so no pictures until tomorrow.

Pull it off and do it again. A little tip though. Pull the tape off enough so that you can grab it from the outside. Than once you get it bolted down and in the right spot you pull all of the tape off and than push it down.

How do you pull it off without breaking the thing? It's on tight...

Use dental floss and a lot of patience. Pick up the same type of tape to re-tape the spoiler. It's 3M, it's some good stuff. Also, it wouldn't be a bad idea to pick up some 3M Wax & Adhessive Remover to clean up the residue left by the tape. I know this isn't what you wanted to hear but it's the only "right" way.

Thanks, I'll take a good look at it tomorrow under the light to see if it's worth messing with if not I'll take your advice.

Update....


I just got a good look at the spoiler in broad daylight and it doesn't look bad at all. It's off by just a tiny bit, certainly not perceptible to human eyes for the most part but unfortunately enough to cause the screw to be off. I should probably just file the hole in the trunk bigger and call it a day.

Only thing is that it's slightly scratched but that's to be expected when you ship prepainted parts.

I know your dilemma as I had this happen with my honeycomb panel! It is curved so I bent it to fit on and I applied a bit too much pressure and she was stuck on(big props to the proper 3M tape for the job)ever so crooked, but I could tell instantly! I kept it this way until I placed the "MUSTANG" letters on the trunk lid, then it didn't line up at all! The next day I used way too much elbow grease along with heavy duty fishing string to remove it! It took me several hours, but it looks 100% now. After that episode, I too, only peeled enough tape out from under to tack it, then pull the rest out after satisfied with the location on both the front and rear spoilers.
If you can live with it and the holes aren't off that much, I'd say go with matching the two holes, use some silicone caulk on the underside and call it a day. I still have yet to fix/rotate my hood pin scuff plates since it looks ok(to me...for now)from a distance.

Hey kooldawg can you check and see if by any chance your 3m tape at the ends of the spoiler didn't stick to the car. Turns out mine didn't quite make it. So now the only thing holding it is the center 3m tape, and 1.3 screws....

I ahve that issue on mine too. Not enough to notice unless you're up close to it. It's been that way for quite some time with no issues.

Well that's good to hear. I wonder how many have had this problem? I think it's because the design calls for tape on a rounded surface where on the original GT500 spoiler the stock mounting points are used...
Maybe that's why the "proper" install calls for drilling the two holes toward the outside of the trunk.

Luckily a buddy of mine from work should give me a hand bolting down the last screw tomorrow on our lunch break. That should put my mind at ease for a while.

How will you locate the proper place for the new holes after you've already installed the spoiler?

The best way to locate the holes is to put the bolts in the spoiler. Put some wax all over the bolt, than put the spoiler down on the trunk where they would go, when you pull it up the wax will be where the holes need to be drilled.

Correction Tupperware. I didn't have one bolt in because the spoiler attached slightly off. I bought a tap today to clear out the hole and it cut into my trunk just enough to bolt it down. I wasn't talking about the two outer holes that were supposed to be drilled in the first place that nobody seems to make anyways.

I got it down again. For now I'll roll like this until i see that too much of the tape wants to go in that case I'll pull it off and redoit. Till then it looks good.

Mine has lifted up a tiny bit on the passenger side only and is really hard to tell if you don't know about. It has been like for months and nothing has happened.

Fishing line is a better bet than dental floss. It's a whole lot stronger and it wont break. Attach the string to a piece of wood or a screw driver (tie it on both ends) and then pull through the 3M tape. Worked like a charm for getting my stock spoiler off (with help of some bug and tar remover and gunk b gone stuff)

Actually, this is the same place mine pulled up. Driver side is down fine.

I had to remove my 2007 V6 bumper (long flat type), and they are held down with two pieces of 2inch wide, 2 foot long 3m.

It took me FOREVER to saw through it with fishing line. Don't know what I would have done without fishing line though.

Yeah, it took me forever with fishing line on my spoiler, too. But it was good because I bought some stuff from walmart with a rating of 75 or 100lbs or something relatively high so that I wouldn't have to worry about it breaking on me all the time and having to start all over again lol

Sadly, I didn't have any fishing line that was high strength or not completely old. It was breaking more than the floss ...
