guess my problem and win a lap dance

Just started 2 days ago.

If i go in reverse and let the clutch engage the whole way my will spit, spudder, idle surge severely, get a check engine light for an instant, shut off and blow smoke.

If i slip the clutch excessively it will back up fine.

I cleaned the connections for the sensors on the tranny and it still does it.

Anyone have any idea? PLEASE HELP!!

Yes it only does it in reverse.

On a side note. I was taking my car back home the same night it started and i hit a pretty bad pot hole and my car instantaneously shutoff and came back on. A few friends have told me that perhaps i have a wire that is bare or getting pinched and causing a short somewhere.

I would check the ground to the block from the negative batery terminal. I just had to replace mine the other day because the insulation was shot. Pull codes while your at it and see what comes up....if everything is fine then is may be something mechanical.

You can also try cleaning the positive terminal on your battery. Just a thought.

a good reason to check the interia switch....one could bridge the switch, then back up and see what happens. i cant think of much that happens differently when backing vs goin forward.

Are you just letting the clutch out really fast?
You may just be pulling the motor down too far causing it to try and save it's self. Which is were the sputtering and dying.
There are different gear ratios between first gear vs reverse gear. So you may not be able to duplicate the effect going forward.
Could you define the problem better? I'm not clear on how fast you are letting the clutch out. What RPM does it start to stutter?
Just to see, try unplugging everything from the tranny and see if it changes how it runs.

Dump the codes and see what the computer says is wrong…

Here's the link to dump the computer codes with only a jumper wire or paper clip and the check engine light, or test light or voltmeter. I’ve used it for years, and it works great.

nintey15.0, The ground was one of the first things i checked. I had just replaced it at the end of last year. It is in good shape.

proxses, I have been backing my car up the same way for 10 years. Never changed the way i do it. It does it at any rpm. I can get the car moving slightly in reverse and let the clutch fully engage and it still does it. Doesnt matter what rpm or how fast i get it moving backwards, as soon as i let the clutch fully engage it does all that i mentioned.

The inertia switch is mounted in the trunk or the hatch area depending on your body style. On the coupes and verts it is usually mounted inside the trunk on the drivers side rear panel. On the hatches it should be in the same spot but covered up with all the plastic mouldings and stuff. So you will have to remove some of the plastic panels inside the hatch are. It is a switch with a wiring harness connected to it and it has a red button on it.

unfortunately right now my car does not stay at my house as i have no garage. It is in a garage bay that i am borrowing from my fiance's father. This limits me on how much i can check things.

hissin50, how do you bridge the switch? what color wires do you bridge together?

i believe there are only two wires on it; the inlet and outlet. just bridge them....i think one is red and one is red/black......

obviously, if this is the problem, fix it. the intertia switch is a nice idea. you dont want to bridge it and forget it, but bridging is nice for testing.

I would also be concerned about the amount of movement you are getting from the engine.. If you have a loose or broken motor mount you may have enough flex to be causing problems with harness at the back of the plenum or the ground strap at the back of the engine.

I was just out under my hood seeing if I could find something that might help you and found that I need to replace my motor mounts...

Thanks man i appreciate taking the time to look over your own car to help out a fellow stanger.

My motor mounts are at the oldest 2 years.

hissin50, I will try that when i get the car out of the garage. The garage i use doesnt have alot of room in it or electricity. I did check over the wiring under the motor and everything looks good. Triple checked the ground and looked at the battery terminals. Still does it.

Something that leads me to believe now that it is a sensor or switch somewhere is that right when i start the car up for the first time that day it will back up fine. After it is warmed up and reading all sensors it starts the crap it has been doing.

does anyone know where to get an inertia switch at? Is it a dealer part? I looked at napa, advance auto and autozone and none of them list it.

edit, i found the part if it is the fuel cut off switch.

The hatch cars hide it under the plastic trim covering the driver's side taillight.

Today i bypassed the inertia switch and that didnt help. I took off the two connections on the clutch pedal and it wouldnt start so i hooked the one up closest to the firewall and kept the other one off and it didnt help. Checked for cracks in the intake tube and it is fine.

I put the new egr position sensor in today also and noticed something odd. While in nuetral it will idle at 1100 rpm. If i put it into any gear the idle will jump to anywhere between 1300 and 1500 rpm. Then when put back into nuetral it will idle down to 1100 again. Anyone think this could be the problem?

i think he meant pulling the wires off the tranny itself. its possible....your back up lights come on when you put it in reverse and some kind of short could be happening when you make that connection. if you disconnect the wires on the clutch pedal it won't start...it is designed that way so you don't start the car with the tranny engaged... Larry
