Hey all,
anonymous post from an established member,

I unfortunately wrecked my 05+GT in the snow, tonight. :bang:
It was single car accident, nothing inured but my pride, feelings, and car, and the property I struck.

I spun out on a slick spot of ice/snow (dang southerners) and off the road,
It hit, (and came to rest on) some concrete barriers.
It took a while for the pullback operator to get it onto the tow.

It looks like most of the damage is around the right front fender / passenger door. :
I can tell the exhaust got torn off.
It doesnt seem to be leaking anything that I can see.
The hood opens, and things generally look o.k. in the bay.
The starter turns, over but it wont crank.
The tow driver thinks he sees a little frame involvement just behind the right front wheel well.
Wheels and tires somehow look o.k.
The driver's door opens, the passenger's doesn't, and the passenger window doesn't seal at the rear edge, (by about 1.5")

I have spent a lot of time and money on the car, and it is FAR from stock.
It is fully insured, I have not had an accident in >20 years, and no tickets / no points, in the last 4 years

hang in there, i am wrapping up . . .

Not knowing where else to go i had it dropped at the DEALERSHIP'S body shop parking lot.
I know this is probably the most expensive place for repairs, but it was teh middle of the night and i didn't know what to do.
I cant really take it around for estimates.

I have no idea if the engine, tranny, or frame are messed up.
I do not know it it is bad enough to be totaled, or not (I doubt it)

Couple that with the fact that the delershp folks may shy away from doing much with all the aftermarket stuff (tune, CAI, pulleys, suspension goodies).

Couple that with my fear that the insurance people (hence my pseudonym) may try to weasel out and say it was because of the performance stuff. (my stance is it was because of the snow/ice).

It was a two lane road, and no one elses was there, so obviously no way i was racing, or even hot dogging in those conditions)

No LEOs involved yet. Once i got home, I called the local LEA and they said since no one was injured, just go by any P.D. and get an accident reporting form and fill it out.

So, all that being said, I am looking for any advice/insight from folks who have been where I am, or know how these things work.

Should I just let the Dealership folks drag it into their shop, check everything out, and get an estimate?
Should I let the insurance adjuster see it first?
(I know they wont pay for the upgraded / after-market equipment, but a door is a door, and a fender is a fender, and a frame is a frame)
Should I instead call around and have it taken somewhere else, that may not be as gun-shy about the after-market stuff on the car?

thanks, to those who are still reading,
sad man:cry:

Earlier this winter on our first significant snow day, my 05GT's ass end kicked out while i was driving straight and like 20 mph! If your all seasons have any amount of wear on them, they're no good in snow. Luckily I just spun into a grassy area and was able to get out. That day I took her to get snow tires on, and the car is great in the snow with them on. You'd be surprised how big of a difference the snow tires make. I had an explorer 4x4 befvore this, and my GT does better in the snow with those tires than my explorer did. If you have to drive your GT in the snow, get snow tires. All seasons will work if they're fairly new, but the snow tires grip awesome.

Sorry to hear that man. Your insurance company should have a list of body shops that will repair it at the insurance company's cost. That is one option, but you do have to make sure that its a reputable shop that won't skimp out. The insurance adjuster should DEFINITELY see if before you get any work done on it though.

As far as the performance stuff goes, you never know - your company might be fine with paying for it. With my old mustang, I was rear ended and one of my Borla exhaust tips got bent. The insurance company gave me the cost for a full replacement Borla cat back. Another time, someone hit my parked stang in a parking lot and scratched one of my aftermarket wheels. Again, they paid for the replacement of the aftermarket wheel, despite the extra $100 it cost over the stock wheel. I didn't pay any extra premiums for this coverage, nor did I ever declare any of this stuff. Can't hurt to check if any of it is damaged.

Good luck! If it is any consolation, this could be a great time to upgrade any body panels that may have been damaged...

I allways let ford fix mine, that way I know I'll get ford replacement parts instead of japanese or something. My insurance co. doesn't like it as they have thier own shops that they perfer I use. In the end it's still my choice, so ford gets the nod.

Had a similar situation with my STI. Except, it was sunny, clear, 15celcious, and i rear ended somone...

There was approx 4k$ in suspension goodies, aftermarket rims, custom headlights, optima battery, etc etc etc that was damaged, bent, scratched or just destroyed. that doesn't include body work, paint, towing, impound fee's, and other stock items :|
State farm basically said, they'll cover 1500$ worth of aftermarket items, but the rest will be returned to stock. and any complications of such wouldn't be covered. Basically, install the parts, and kick me out the door.

The Insurer was commited to only covering the replacment stock items. So, I took that note, and went to the body shop i delt with. I told them to purchase these aftermarket items for replacement. and in turn, they deducte whatever the insurance agency gives them for stock part + labour. so i ended up paying the bill at the end of it all.

Now, on a side note. Your insurance company. If there is Any Engine modication and the engine is damaged. and the insurance agency can prove that there is a mod, Then they have the right to drop you and void your contract. (Assuming you haven't disclosed that modifcation information to them)

Otherwise, unless your contract is something out of the odinary, any aftermarket items not related to the direct function of the engine,(IE, exhaust/intake isn't considered apart of engine modications) they are obligated to replace with STOCK replacements. They don't have to pay any more than what a stock peice costs. They also have the right to use re-manufactured parts (IE refurbished from a junk yard).

I'm sure i've left one or two things out from my experiance, but i can't remember 0.o.

Once your car is repaired, i entirely suggest you go to your agency and find out what type of ADDED coverage you can recieve for the modifications you've done. Otherwise, if your in another accident - Your SOL when it comes to replacing the aftermarket items again.

About the remanufactured parts - I think I remember reading that a law was passed preventing the insurance companies from using remanufactured parts if the car was within a certain timeframe of being new (say two years). It could've been a MA state law. Anyone able to confirm this or am I making it up? Either way, look into it, and if your car qualifies, then make sure you dont get screwed.

I can only say no such law in Ontario.
a 9month old car, they bloody hell wanted to replace the bumper and quarter panel with remanufactured.. cheap ****s.

hey man if it's any comfort, i just bought a 2007 GT 6 days ago and the other day while backing out hit my landlord's car. my nephew (he's 6) was talking to me and I got distracted, and I ended up hitting her car. It wasn't major but there is a minor dent and few scratches on my car (and hers). I haven't had an accident in 10 years, nor a moving violation in like 4. It just really sucks that here is my new ride and not even a week and I hit somebody.

Try not to beat yourself up if you are. Life finds a way to go on. Hope that helps

In my state, Kentucky, you have the right to decide which shop fixes your car. You also do not have to accept other companies' body panels. If in doubt, ask your agent who should work for you not the insurance company, or someone in the know. Your body shop probably knows the law, for example.

Sorry about your accident.

I am a 30 year year insurance agent and the owner of a highly modified Stang. A couple of pointers:

1. Read your policy. It is a legal contract and states what is and is not covered.
2. Most state laws allow you to take your car to the body shop of your choice.
3. Most policies do not exclude coverage for mods. Some may have restrictions.
4. They can't refuse to pay because your car is modded.
