Had to put my dog to sleep...

Well, today's probably one of the worst days of my life. My dog, my best friend of 9 years, had to be put to sleep. He was acting sluggish lately and wasn't exactly breathing right, so we brought him to a vet who sent us to a better facility to see what was wrong. It turns out his body was covered, COVERED in cancer: Spine, spleen, liver, stomach etc., he had an enlarged heart and his lungs were filling up with fluid. I dropped my mom off at the pet hospital in Red Bank this morning figuring they would simply diagnose him, then I got a call that he had to be put down. I was stuck in Manhattan until 11, and up until then I was fine. But once I walked in the house and saw his empty bed, a doggy biscuit on the floor and his empty cage, I lost it. I went out to forget about it and it worked, until I came home again. I even went down in my basement to get on my laptop and I looked next to me to pet him, and for the first time in a long time, he's not there. I've lost loved ones before (All my Grandparents, some close friends, cousins, aunts & uncles etc.), but never have I lost one that I saw everyday like I did my dog. Anyone else go through this and feel like complete crap? I can't believe it happened so quickly, just 5 days ago he seemed fine. Sorry, but I needed to vent somewhere... mods delete it if it bothers you that much.

Pics soon. Kirby 5/18/98 - 6/20/07 :(

I recently lost my buddy, Hogan, the most dopey, harmless, loveable big ol' lug of a red doberman you ever could meet. I believe he was only about 7, at the most. He was playing around just fine in the yard with Yeller (random big yellow lab my sis adopted awhile back), and my sis left to get some groceries. Came back, and Hogan was just lying there on the ground in the middle of the yard, like he'd just collapsed in mid-stride. He'd been developing some of those weird lumps of stuff (supposedly benign tumors) here and there on his underside over the past few months, but apparently some similar ones - cysts or something, I dunno - had developed on the inside close to some organs. One of them apparently ruptured, spread a bunch of stuff in his system, and he'd dropped dead. Poor ol' guy probably never knew what hit 'em. :(

Been a few years, but the last one before that was a rat terrier, Cricket, that we'd had for 13 years. She developed doggie diabetes, stated losing her eyesight and getting scrawny, and the last month or so of her time, she started getting occasional seizures and such. Finally just had to have her put down at the vet - an injection of some purple stuff that was potassium-something-a-rather. My Pops took it harder than me, as Cricket was his lil' buddy around the house and especially close to him since Mum and him had split.

Pets are great when they're around, but GAWD, it's depressing when they go ... and they always do, and always too soon. :(

Last September I had to get my German Sheperd put down.He developed a dog version of MS so he was losing control of his back legs and such.It was probally the hardest day of my life.He was in great shape except for the MS so if it weren't for that he could of lived to 15 instead of 12.Just seeing him one second nudging your hand with his nose to just falling over and not moving was really hard. The dog was our whole families best friend he was extremely loyal and always there . When he was injected with that mysterious death mixture and kicked the bucket it was the first time I EVER saw my dad actually cry he misses his best buddy more than anything and so do I .There's no where in the house I can look without remembering a memory of Him.

And sorry for the lose of your dogs guys I know how hard it is to go through! :SNSign:

Look....I'm going to tell EVERYBODY like this. And I want you all to listen GOOD.

Does anybody ever wonder WHY our domesticated pets seem to ALWAYS die horrible, painful deaths? How come the majority of cases seem to be tumors, cancer, blindness, and even bleeding before passing on? Doesn't this seem STRANGE to anybody else? I had a cocker spaniel (red hair) when I was growing up, his name was Scotch. Scotch loved EVERYTHING there was to life. He loved going camping. He love playing in the snow. He LOVED going to the beach and rolling around in the sand. It was so much fun to watch him have SO much fun doing everything that we ourselves enjoyed. He would roll around in the snow and then pop up and look at us with his nose covered in white, and we just thought that was so cute. If we were at the beach, he would roll around and then pop up and look at us with sand all over his snout. Again, picture perfect moment. He even enjoyed swimming, of course, because he was a Spaniel. After about 8 yrs., Scotch started to get lethargic and sluggish, and began to lose the twinkle in his eye. A couple of yrs. later, we started to notice bumps appearing on the underside of his body, golf ball size nots. Come to find out, you got it, those lumps were cancerous and there was nothing we could do to stop it. We let him live a little while longer and then we put him down, or should I say, out of his "misery."

If you REALLY want to know WHY this is happening to our dogs. I'll tell you. The reason is not only simple.....it's obvious!

What are we feeding these animals EVERY SINGLE DAY OF THEIR LIVES?

We feed them dog food. COMMERCIALIZED dog food. What is IN dog food? SO MANY ****ING PRESERVATIVES AND CHEMICALS designed to keep the dog food from deteriorating, not to keep the dog HEALTHY. Does anybody even KNOW what's in dog food? Sodium pentabarbitol. Does anybody know what sodium pentabarbitol is? It is the SAME chemical they use to PUT YOUR DOG OR CAT TO SLEEP WHEN YOU TAKE THEM TO GET EUTHANIZED.

Why is this chemical in dog food? I'll tell you in a second. Dog food consists of EVERYTHING that WE humans DON'T EAT because it's to unhealthy for us to consume. If you look on the side of ANY dog food bag (with the exception of a few I will name in a minute), it will tell you RIGHT THERE that it contains BY-PRODUCTS. Namely, chicken by-products. By-products are the parts of the chicken that we deem unsuitable for our own edibility. Chicken feet, chicken beaks, chicken eyes, things like that. Would YOU eat that ****. NO! So why would our DOGS eat that ****? There have been instances where euthanized DOGS AND CATS are put into dog food. And what killed those dogs and cats: SODIUM PENTABARBITOL. So when you feed your dog dog food, you're not ONLY turning him into a CANNIBAL, you're slowly EUTHANIZING your pet over the years b/c you're slowly feeding him sodium pentabarbitol.

THINK ABOUT THIS FOLKS. YOUR DOG IS A MAMMAL. WE ARE MAMMALS. DO WE EAT THE SAME ****ING CRAP EVERYDAY AND CONSIDER OURSELVES EATING BALANCED NUTRITIONAL MEALS. **** NO! What do WE need to eat in order to stay healthy. Fruits, vegetables, meat, and other stuff that your doctor tells you to consume. WHY would any other mammal be any different? What do dogs in the wild eat?

Meat, real meat. Fruits, nuts, vegetables. ANYTHING they can get their hands on. Dogs are equal opportunity eaters. They'll eat ANYTHING! So why is it that sometimes you feed your dog dog food and he takes ONE sniff at it then walks away. Oh, he'll come back LATER and eat it, but not b/c he WANTS to. It's because he HAS to. ****! You're feeding him the food, he'll eat whatever you give him. He's NOT SUPPOSED to eat dog food ladies and gentlemen. He's a ****ING mammal. He needs milk and vegetables and rice (especially rice) JUST LIKE WE DO. We as a society are under the impression that the wild dog stomach, and the domesticated dog stomach, are TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT STOMACHS. This is simply NOT true. Yes, we have changed the way dogs look and act over the years by breeding them a certain way to achieve different colors and temperaments, but the digestive system of a dog will NEVER change. It's the same digestive system in the wild as it is in your domesticated dogs body. They eat the SAME ****.

The myth that we as dog owners are unaware about, is the fact that dog food is a complete and balanced diet for your dog. THAT'S BULL****! The reason we believe this is b/c the Humane Societies and veterinarians TELL us to feed them dog food. WHY? Because the ****ING dog food companies DONATE FOOD TO THESE ESTABLISHMENTS ALL ACROSS THE WORLD. If these establishments are getting free food, then WHY BUY ANYTHING ELSE? SO THEY FEED IT TO YOUR DOG, PLUS THEY HAVE DOG FOOD SIGNS EVERYWHERE PROMOTING "SCIENCE DIET" and "EUKANUBA", AND "IAMS". These dog foods are ****ing CRAP. So we look at this and ASSUME we're supposed to feed our dogs this dog food, when in reality, a REAL veterinarian wouldn't feed THEIR dog this food if they knew any better. It's a scam. It's marketing. Dog food companies would be out of business if the public KNEW what was REALLY IN their food. They basically get away with murder. Matter of fact, they ARE getting away with murder. By the looks of the FIRST post in this thread, they just GOT away with murdering somebody else's dog.

Look on the side of the bag and read WHERE IT SAYS "CHICKEN BY-PRODUCTS." IT SAYS IT RIGHT ****ING THERE ON ALL OF THE FOODS I JUST NAMED!

Commercial dog food is horse**** for your dog, almost LITERALLY. The dog food companies are such a scam and nobody is doing anything to stop it BECAUSE NO ONE KNOWS WHAT IS GOING ON.

Well guess what? I KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON. AND SO DO YOU FOLKS NOW! It's common ****ing sense. Why would you feed your animal the SAME food everyday of it's life and assume it's getting a healthy diet? Let me ask you something.......Would YOU eat McDonalds everyday and believe you're healthy? **** NO, and dog food is the same if not WORSE than fast food.

You want your dog to live 134% longer than what your vet predicts he/she will. FEED HIM WHAT HE NEEDS TO SURVIVE! REAL meat. REAL fruits. REAL vegetables. Don't feed him sugar, don't feed him fattening foods, and DON'T feed him too much sodium. THESE are the human foods you need to stay away from, NOT the fruits and vegetables.

It's as simple as this: What's GOOD for us, is GOOD for them. What's BAD for us, is BAD for them! That's it! Would YOU eat dog food. NO! Then why would your DOG eat dog food? HE SHOULDN'T.

I spent $50.00 to get a Dog Food recipes book that gave me 100 HOME COOKED recipes I can make to feed my new dog properly. His name is Sam. He's a Beagle/Dachsund. Sam is SO happy to not be eating commercial dog food anymore that it brings a smile to my face KNOWING that I'm taking care of him the way me and family DIDN'T take care of Scotch when I was a kid.

However, sometimes I DO feed Sam dog food. But it's definitely NOT any dog food you buy over the counter. I specially order him dog food from a private family company that makes their OWN dog food that DOESN'T use any by-products, yet also provides him with the rice and Omega-3 protein that he NEEDS to survive. I pay $65.00 a bag for this food, it's called HOLLISTIC BLEND. And you know what, Sam is worth EVERY penny I spend on it.

By the way, I never did mention any other non by-product foods. The only one over the counter I can think of is Nutro. They don't use any by-products. If ANYBODY wants a list of REAL dog foods (you'll have to order it over the internet though) I will be MORE than happy to list the top 10 best dog foods in the world for your animal. I payed money for the list....but when it comes to saving lives.....I'll give away ANYTHING for free.

As far as selecting an appropriate dog food....ALWAYS choose something that has RICE in it. Rice is FABULOUS for a dog's stomach. And make SURE there are no by-products.

The ONLY over the counter food I know is the NUTRO Lamb and rice food.

I fed my dog this with no problems until I ordered the $65.00 bag of HOLLISTIC BLEND.

Believe me, if you love your dog, your dog is worth it! :flag:

Ladies and gentlemen..........have a good day.

fox racer,

I am sorry for your loss.

This thread is heartbreaking. I have a dog who is absolutely adorable that I rescued. I dread that inevitable day down the road, hopefully it's a long road. I think it was George Carlin that referred to pet dogs as a tragedy waiting to happen......

I still miss my Brandy... She was a miniature boxer. We grew up together and were the same age. When we were 15 we had to put her down :(

I hope all dogs really do go to heaven cause if she ain't there when I die I'm filing a complaint.

I am very sorry for your loss.

My first dog I got when I was around 5, her name was Oreo and she was the sweetest, most loveable dalmation ever. When I was 14 she got very sick and we had to get her put down. She went blind b/c of dog diabetes and also had cancer.

My second dog dying was the WORST thing that I had ever felt. I got Bama, a boxer/ malamute mix. He was only about 2.5 and he weighed 100 lbs of pure beast, no fat on him. Last year we were taking him to the vet for a check-up and hew was completely healthy, and he thought he was still 20 lbs. He was MY first dog as in I took care of him, he slept with me and everything. When we were leaving the vet, he wanted to sit with me in the front seat. He jumped up and I had to pull him out so he could go in the back. As he got back out of the car, he pulled backwards, out of his collar and ran out onto a very busy highway. I was sprinting out after him and yelling his name. A van hit him, right in front of me. I ran out in the road and blocked traffic and held him as he died. I picked him up by myself and carried him off the road crying. It was the worst moment of my life. My mom had run inside as I was carrying him off the road and a bunch of vets and nurses ran out and helped me carry him inside. When they came back and told me for sure he was dead I exploded into more tears. I carried him home in the back of my neighbors truck and burried him that night.

A few months later I got my current dog Shelby, who just turned two. She is a dachsund- terrier mix and I love her to death.

fox racer,

I am sorry for your loss.
Nutro sucks and was recalled.. I work in the pet food industry.. Innova evo and california natural are 2 of the foods made for pets..

Aw man don't break out the missed doggy pics :(

I know how you feel man, and I feel for you. I really do. My best buddy, Buddy ( ;) ), we found out last year out of nowhere had an untreatable (well, uncurable) spinal affliction prevalent in few breeds (he was a Doberman) and I had to put him down. One day we were wrestling around the yard the next we were in the animal E.R. and that was it. No time to even work ourselves up to it all :(

We had a Dobey years ago who had stomach cancer, and a Shephard that had another type. I think those were the only two with such problems.

Lots a ton more in the past too, but this one was my real baby. Maybe all our pups are together now chasing Mustangs in Doggy Heaven :)

Dad brought home a little feist when I was in the 2nd or 3rd grade, the first dog I could remember watching him grow up since he was a puppy. So I grew close to him, even though in his early years with me being young I done a couple mean things that I still haven't forgotten. I never hurt him physically, but I think I hurt his feelings. Fast foward to my freshman or sophmore year of high school, mom was driving my fox body every day at the time, and me and dad took the car to the vet for his regular checkup/shots. I held him in my arms on the way, good dog, never even moved hardly. Got there, he was on the table, they checked him out, and when they came back I heard the most god awful news I've ever heard. My dog had cancer in his spleen or some other place and while the spleen was curable, tests would have to be done to be sure where it was, which was expensive, and if it wasn't in the spleen it wasn't curable anyways. Me being 14 years old, and trying to act like a man tried my damndest to hold back my tears in that vet room. 30 seconds later, I couldn't take it anymore, I cried like a little school girl in that vet room, out of the lobby, and about halfway home I stopped and sniffled as I petted my dog on his ride home. He got to live a few more months, my biggest regret was not spending more time with him with his last few days alive, and dad saw him one evening, his head had swelled up, and he laid in his dog house shivering. Brought him some blankets and ran a lightbulb into his doghouse for warmth. Next day he was put down. I took that news a little better as I knew it was coming, but I still cried later that day. I still miss that dog, he was a loyal buddy and a trooper to the end.

RIP Rowdy.

Hey man sorry to hear about your dog, I had to put my dog to sleep december 4th 2006 after 14 years with him due to health issues, i had a rough childhood, im 25 now so i had him for a long time I also don't have any brothers or sisters and my parents weren't really there for me so he WAS my best and only real friend, this is making me feel weird just typing about him, it's hard to lose a pet i wish you well with the loss, my dog had a stroke and i spent thousands trying to extend his life, he only lives 3 weeks after that but i will never regret doing it. R.I.P Coki 4/92-12/4/07

I had to put my cat, Earl, down last year. Although a cat, he acted like a dog, friendly to anyone that walked in the door. He seemed fine then acted sluggish and couldn't jump on the kitchen counter where he wasn't supposed to be  One week later he was dead because of kidney failure. I really wonder sometimes if it was the food that killed him that has been in the news as of late. Sorry for the loss fox racer, it will get better but of course take time.

i used to do volunteer work for a vet and 4 top recommended foods from him wherw nutro, science diet, iams, and eukanuba. all 4 where recalled because they were all made by menus. From what i seen best type of food for a dog is the dry food, the wet food was what the recall was on. Joe sorry to hear for your loss i havent lost an animal and im not looking forward too, don't be sad though your dog wouldn't want you to be! Greybeast, that is an F-ed up way to loose a pet, as for the dogs you saved your my type of guy, good luck with you current pets. Joe its kinda hard but maybe you should look into getting another dog.
