Hard Start Problem

Hello All,

Well I have finally bought my favorite car.... A 1995 Cobra Mustang
with 35,000 miles. Everything is all original down to the thermostat. Except
for the dist. cap and rotor button which I replaced. The problem that I am having is that when I start the car it has to crank over for about 15-20 seconds before the engine will fire, then SOMETIMES
the engine will spit and sputter for about 5-7 seconds before it starts running. I have replaced the cap and rotor, pulled a few of the plugs and
everything looks fine. It just seems to me that the engine cranks to much before the engine starts. My 89 5.0 starts as soon as the key is turned. Any
assistance would be greatly appreciated

Start with the basics. Check the fuel pressure, check the base timing, check the vacuum. Check for spark at all 8 plugs.

Then, clean your MAF & IAT.

If you don't know how to do any of these properly, do a search on this forum.

I was figuring on doing the basics this week. I was looking
for anything that might be different from my 1989 5.0, i.e. a sensor
that I might not have known about. I know MAF is Mass Air Flow but
what is IAT

Check your IACV.. most likely this has become lazy causing slow starts.


Give the car a lil bit of gas when you go to start it. If that helps, your IACV is lazy. If it complicates matters, then chances are that is not it. Then when you go to start your car and it starts to crank excessively, floor it to shut off the injectors. This will clean out the car and should also help start it, that is, if the car is overcompensating fuel at start up.

Hard Start

Well I tried what you said and pushed the gas at start up.... and wala
the engine started right up......what would be the fix... clean up the IACV
or just replace the whole thing...
