What does this tool look like and how does it operate? Is it just a stud with a washer and nut?

Would a stud and nut work OK? Then you would have all the threads engaged, and not risk stripping out threads if you only have a few engaged and try to 'pull' the balancer on with the bolt...

you are trying to put the balancer on??? you can use a rubber mallet and tap it on.

Actually, I'm building a new engine. I was just wondering how the install tool works, since some people have problems with theirs (unable to engage threads, too few threads, etc.). Anyone know how the tool works? I was thinking that if it is just a stud and nut, I could go to the hardware store and get a long bolt and nut, and use it as a stud. I'm assuming that a stud (in that size) is not available.

well i think that most people in here, including me, just used the balancers own mounting bolt to pull itself on.

if you cant get it on far enough to catch threads with that bolt, it may not be fitting right. but otherwise you probably can get a stud and a nut to do the job.
