Hartman upper intake

Put a Hartman plastic upper manifold and larger throttle body on my otherwise stock 88 302 in my cobra kit car. I was expecting to lose torque, I can not feel any loss and it does not "lay down" after 4,000 rpm as before. Sure cleans up the engine compartment, lots lighter than stock, and looks alot better, kind of like a Rochester F.I. unit from the 60's.

To everyone reading along - a Cobra kit car weighs a good 700-1000 lbs. less than a Stang (or my Volvo). Loss of low end torque is MUCH LESS NOTICEABLE in a lightweight car, so Mike's experience might not be quite the same as ours would be.

Don't suppose you dyno'd before, and are planning to after Mike?

Hartman intake

I agree with the weight issue[car weighs about 2200 lbs], I am really suprised how well it performs, I drove it again today and I can not tell any diffrence at the low end. I put a larger t body on at the swap, but I doubt that makes any diff. I am getting 25 inches of vacume at idle? does that sound about right, didn't have a vacume gauge before the swap. I also notice the throttle response seems better, would the shorter intake benefit that? Best thing is getting rid of all the mass of the old manifold, everything is accesible now, even put some new valve covers on ! I'll send an image if you'll let me know how to do it.

Is that with the stock unported lower? The stock lower is only suposed to flow around 130cfm per runner. Maby you need to contact TMOSS, he ports them out pretty nice pretty cheap.

I'll do a search on Hartman and see if I can find pics.

25" of vacuum at idle is the most I've ever heard of on any engine I've ever messed with. My cam is VERY mild (like a Cobra cam), my mods very conservative (Y heads, explorer intake) and mine pulls 18-20" of vacuum at idle - about the same as it did stock. And the bottom end is in very good condition.

Where'd you get your intake? I can find a Hartman, Inc. that does what appears to be snowmobile applications - but can't find anything about a Hartman intake for a 5.0L.

I believe Hartman was actually from years ago. They were bought or absorbed by (or at least the intake was) Comp Cams. They make this box style intake as well as valve covers and some other stuff with this same material.

Thanks, I guess I don't have any vacume leaks, Hartman was bought by Comp Cams, Downs Ford also sell these manifolds. Our setup here in Calif., lets me have a legal computer controled motor without any smog stuff, and with this manifold, its almost like a carb motor, but turn the key and its running smooth all the time.

Mike - curious - why did you make the switch to that manifold? Were you trying to pick up a bit of top end power? Did you dyno before the change?

Hartman

I really did it to get rid of the 5.0 intake, I decided to try the Hartman or I would have gone carb. Got the hartman on e bay cheap, expecting it to be a dog, I've driven it hard and I can't tell the difference, probably because the car is so light. I really like the way its looks, with no smog stuff and only a small alternator, the engine looks clean.

That intake is for a GT40 style intake - look at the gasket. I remember the Hartman's though. Can't remember if they were made for the stock and/or GT40 style intakes.

Mike - is yours on a stock lower, or on a GT40? If so, you'd see noticeable improvements if you had tmoss port that stock lower for you. It's the biggest restriction on the stock engine - much bigger restriction than the upper you replaced.
