Has anyone seen a mod where you bypass your airconditioner pulley for more power?

I can't remember where i saw this but it was a kit you can order and they claimed if you bypassed your air conditioner pulley and used there new shorter belt and a new tensioner you could gain up to 9 extra horses. Has anyone seen this kit or know if i can just buy a shorter belt and what length it is so i can bypass the air conditioner pulley. :bang:

I don't if this is what your talking about but i'll give it a shot. The dealer took out the A/C system in my 4v and got the puleyl bracket for it. It was 55.00 dollars for it. If that is what you need i'll give you the number to the place where I had the dealer got it from. Well first the place the dealer called didnt' sell it but the owner he gave me a number to another place and they got it.

PM me if you like the number.

The kit i saw you still get to keep your factory ac all intact but you just change your factory belt and the factory tensioner.

if you don't have the A/C turned on then it uses less than 0.5 hp. just like an idler pulley does.

if you have the A/C or Defrost on and you go to WOT(wide open throttle) the A/C compressor disengages so there is no loss of HP at WOT.

But it's still spinning it since the belt is touching it.
I believe the mod is just getting a shorter belt and NOT put it on the AC pulley.

AC pulley delete

99% of modern engine managment computers cut-out the AC clutch under wide-open thottle aka WOT. All Fords have been doing this for a long time. So unless you just want to save some weight leave the AC alone.

You live in Texas and are willing to give-up the comfort of having A/C for a few HP?? :nonono: You're crazy! There are plenty of other ways to increase HP without giving up your A/C so keep it. Also think of re-sale value if/when you get another new car ... leaving your A/C dormant for a while is the worst thing you can do for it. Seals dry up which allows moisture into the system which can eventually corrode parts inside from the refridgerant/oil not circulating. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't even consider buying a car without A/C and fixing a neglected system can get expensive.

As others have said, the A/C clutches are disengaged at WOT anyway, so bypassing it won't add any power. The only reason to do it is the weight savings, and I wouldn't even consider it in Texas.

You won't gain anything if the AC is turned off, but you can gain 5-10 HP by bypassing the power steering... :nice:

By routing a shorter belt, if you can manage to do that, will gain you next to nothing.

The AC eliminator doesn't free up much if any HP, but you drop 35 pounds of weight by ditching the AC crap.

That's true enough... :stupid:

I know someone who has bypassed his power steering pump on a late model T-bird with 4.6 and he gained 5 HP on the dyno and a tenth of a second in the quarter... :nice:

It takes 3 minutes to swap belts. When you goto track, put on shorter AC bypass belt. When you go home, put regular belt back on.

No thanks and not worth the trouble to me for a HP or two. Besides that, I wouldn't be able to ride in A/C on my way to the track. If you're a hardcore drag racer then fine rip out the whole system for weight savings otherwise it isn't worth it.

When my son used to run his 91 mustang 5.0 at the track, he changed to what he called a "short belt". I'm not sure, but I believe it bypassed the smog pump and the power steering. All I know is that it made a significant difference (>0.1 sec quicker ET in the 1/8th mile) on performance. Does anyone know if it is possible to do something similar on the newer Mustangs?

It literally takes 3 minutes. I don't do it, but if I did, it would take me longer to take my spare and sub out of my car than to swap to a smaller pulley.

The only reason i wanted info on how to do this mod is for when i go to the track, i'm just trying to find ways to lowere my ET'S. :bang:
