Which ones do I buy? I was thinking of buying the crane 1.7s. I can get them at Advance for $200. What spring kit can I use?

I have recently been looking into this also. I did a search and found a couple of reccomendations for these:

Springs: Crane: Summit p/n: crn-44308-1 $114
1.7 Rockers: Crane: Summit p/n crn-44746-16 $200

This is the minimum upgrade for stock heads to prevent binding.

These are the exact pieces that I'm running right now with my e-303 and stock e7's. I have not had any problems with these. I did however have to grind the ends of the arms near the roller for clearance on the retainers. I called Crane's tech line before I did this and they said that it was normal and that the arms are made with extra material just for this purpose. These springs are listed to be good to .560" lift and 6500 rpm. Check out Crane's website cranecams dot com, there is some good info on there about the springs. Good Luck with your choices!

Legalize420, are you serious? Did you get them off of someone that was selling them or from a company? Probably the first one. Oh yeah, we've been having incredible weather down here. Doesn't even feel like winter, that's why we get so many winter texans. Our average has been in the upper 70s since winter started.

Thanks Rio, I'll send him a pm asap. The above mentioned packaged was suggested to me by a couple of guys at Advanced but wasn't sure, you know I always have to ask stangnetters first before I buy something for my car.

i went out on the boat, it was about 80*.perfect. i got my rockers from ebay. i got offered a second chance on an item that did not meet its reserve ( it sux not having the banana on the first smiley page, or dammmit) . you will pay no more that $100 on ebay well 100 give or take a few

V6V8SWAP: Do you think it was the new retainers that came in that spring kit that caused you to have to grind the rockers? I ask because Crane also sells Summit p/n crn-99841-16 which is just the springs and you reuse the stock retainers. According to Cranes web site this kit also meets the rate and seat/open pressure requirements (475 118/375) for the 2031 cam. The 44308-1's also have a bigger I/D and O/D by .155in. What do you think?

I think it was the retainers. I was kinda shocked when I first put the rockers on and they touched the retainers and the roller was not touching the valve stem. That would have been bad had the engine actually been in the car (the engine was on the engine stand). I don't think I would have seen that as easily and more than likely dropped a multitude of valves when I got it running. Look at Crane's website, I think it's under the installation instructions that it talks about the different keeper groove locations between intake and exhaust valves. IIRC, I had to grind off more of one side (intake or exhaust) than the other. The part # 99841-16 is/are the same springs that come in the kit p/n 44308, just without the retainers and locks. I'm not sure if the stock retainers and keepers could be used. I'm inclined to think that the stock retainers would not be big enough to fit the bigger springs correctly/properly. Just a guess though.
If you're concerned about the grinding, it really wasn't that big of a deal. Just have to grind and trial fit until you feel like you have enough clearance with the retainer. If you do this, make sure that you clean the rockers really well after grinding to get all the little bits of aluminum out of the trunnion/roller areas.

V6V8SWAP: I called Crane and they said that kit (44308-1) comes with two differant color locks, just for this issue. The tech I talked to had never heard of this issue (uses the same setup on his 94 GT!?) and said if the correct color lock is used there should be no issues. What do you think about his responce? Could he be right? Thanks

Hmmmm. It was someone from the Crane tech line that told me that it is normal to have to grind them down sometimes. He said that is why they have so much extra material under the roller tip pin. Yes, there are red locks for the intake valves and black locks for the exhaust. It's been over a year since I put this all together, but I'm sure that I used the proper locks. Hell, I don't know now!! LOL But, I did check the installed height of the springs after install and they all checked right on the money. This was the first time I had ever removed springs (I've been working on cars for around 25 yrs now), but it was really a straight forward install (with new seals too).

The way the rep made it sound was you get two diff locks for every valve. The tab in the lock is lower on one which gives you more valve stem sticking up. Not a diff intake and exhaust but at totaly diff set as an option for which ever works best. I think I am going to call them again?

I went by these instructions when I installed the springs:

I only had 32 keepers with the kit I got (from someone on ebay, so there might be something wrong there) 16 Red for the intake valves and 16 black for the exhaust valves. I have put about 1800-2000 miles on my car since the engine swap and have had no apparent problems with it, but I still could have had some troubles and not known about it too. I've got some new GT-40X aluminum heads to put on it this winter (soon I hope!), so these will be coming off soon anyway but let me know what you find out because I'm a little nervous about it now! LOL.

According to those directions, you are correct in saying the two types of locks was ment for the intake and exhaust. Unless the ebay seller did not send you every thing. I will call Crane again.
Are you going to be selling your springs and rockers when you put on the new heads?

Rockers-No, Springs-Maybe (LOL). I was going to try to sell the e7's and all valvetrain together (you don't need any stockers do you?), but I'll let you know!!

I called Crane again and this guy said the grinding is normal. It is called a radius grind and they should be ground to make a .040 gap between the rocker and the retainer. Did you install your springs with the heads in the car?

Have extra cash for valve springs and rockers.
