My daily driver 1984 toyota pick is in need of an engine rebuild. Well I got looking at diffrent "performance parts" for the good old 22r and ended up buying a cam, a header and also a spare head to port and polish.

So what do you guys think? Did I done go and lose my mind spending extra cash on somethin besides the mustang? :nono:

i think you'll be quite pleased with the little 22r after these modes. the 22r is a good little motor. too bad you don't have one the later models ones, like 88 or later, i think, that had the factory fuel injection instead of a carb. that reminds me are you going to upgrade the carb? a good weber carb is a bit pricey but will help wake the 22r up a bit more. nothing wrong with modding your daily driver, wish i had the money to mod my 93 cherokee some, like a cam header hi-flow cat, cat back system, cold air intake, hi-flow throttle body and a super chip, would really wake it up a lot and also help improve the mileage quite a bit. if i could afford the mods they would get me about 3-5 mpg and maybe more if i could keep my foot out of it, an upgraded ignition would be in there as well

Toyota had a good thing going with those truck 4-cylinders. My dad had a '94 pickup until recently that he bought new. He put something like 280k on the first engine(and timing chain!) and it never used any oil. It had enough torque to surprise you sometimes.

You ought to find a 20R head with the smaller chambers so you can boost the compression. I bet with the cam, header, and muffler it will sound good.

And yes you're crazy, but so am I.

I was wonderign about the carb also. But like you said they are expensive!

The stock carb is 290 CFM. Which when I do the cfm the calculations for 2.366 L is plenty big for as fast as I plan on turning.

Yeah EFI would be nice, but so would that turbo kit I saw goin on ebay a few days ago

Just do a blow-through turbo setup. No need for EFI and you can still make tons-o-power.

You are a bad influence on me.

When you do blow through does it suck the extra gas outa the carb as well or are jetting changes required?

The reason I ask is I know the stock carb is a pos that has zero adjustment on it...all factory sealed.

The turbo kit that was on ebay a few days abo went for like 250 bucks. but if you add in new carb and all that it adds up way too fast...for a 4 banger lol

dont forget

My first car ever was a 2WD '87 Toyota PU with a 22R and 4-Speed that I beat the absolute living hell out of and never even wimpered. I had a toysport header, intake, 20R head, cam, custom exhaust, etc. Nearly every bolt on I could. Ran it that way for about a year until I, uh, dropped the block while jumping it.

Good times. Thing was a donut machine.

:D

With a blow-through, the turbo is put before the carb. The compressed air goes into the carb and a boost referencing fuel pressure reg ramps the pressure to compensate for boost. You need jetting changes, usually other carb mods too. On top of that, an electric fuel pump capable of your base pressure(usually 3-6psi) plus whatever boost psi you'll run. All that extra trouble means you can still intercool this setup. In a draw-through, the setup is easier, but you cannot intercool(ie, limited gains). The whole thing is probably more than you want to put into the truck tight now anyway. My turbo Briggs & Straton project is unfortunately on the back burner now...
