help identify my trak-lok brand?!?

Friend is out of town, for a week, so I got permission to use his shop to fix my posi that so badly needs it. Threw the FMS posi rebuild clutches into a little pan of friction modifier, got my car up on jackstands, pulled the diff cover, removed the brakes & axles, go to pull out the 's' spring, and find that there is no 's' spring........instead there are a couple plates sandwiching little coil springs.......I know this can't be the factory posi, because when looking for the little tabs clutch tabs that should be visible in the sides of the carrier, there aren't any Most people wouldn't be angered to find that they have an upgraded posi, but I now am stuck with a partially disassembled car with an unknown brand of posi, and the uncertainty of whether or not I can rebuild this thing. Any surefire ways to identify it? From looking at pictures on summitracing.com, I think it might be an eaton, but I have no way of knowing for sure. Can anyone give me some direction as to how I can go about figuring this out? If it is an eaton, will I be able to rebuild it, or will I need to cough up the change for a whole new unit?

sounds to me like you have a "cone type" carrier.

you can freshen up the cones by resurfacing them with 400 grit sant paper. be sure to mark the shims and caps and make sure they go back in on the same side. hope this helps

My center section looks identical to that. I have some pics on my cell phone which is dead. The only markings I could find on the case were:

H9 67 -> <- 266

I'll post pics as soon as my phone charges. There has to be more to it than just sanding the cones, isn't there?

yea dude it sounds like you have an auburn cone type carrier. If you like to go straight its an ok set up but doughnuts or any kind of corners (driven hard) WILL eat this thing up. Like I said if you are into drag racing only and nice to the corners on the street it will work fine. just hit it real good with some 400 grit sp and slap her back together and it will hook both wheels be warned you will get some low speed sharp turn chatter.

if it's a cone type you throw it away once it starts slipping, there is no rebuilding them. eaton's use the same type coil spring arrangement, you may still be in luck.

I haven't ripped into it yet, so there's still some hope that it's an Eaton. If it turns out this thing is an Eaton, I'm assuming it can be rebuilt just like the Ford unit?

****, it's definitely an Auburn. Carrier has the same lilttle Auburn "A" symbol cast on it as the little one pictured on their website. What the heck do I do now? I'd try sanding the cones, but if they will just burn up again in 5,000 miles, I don't see the point.

Curious also if this thing can be disassembled easily while still in the differential. I'd assume the little spring loaded plates pound out just like the s-spring does?

this is the eaton 9 times out of ten you will see the auburn unit

I was actually looking at differentials earlier. If it were me, I'd pick up a truck/Explorer 31 spline Trac-loc and swap everything over. Summitracing has brand new 31 spline FRPP diffs for $255.

I'd do that if I had the car sitting in my garage. As it is, it's in a friends shop who will be back friday and need the car out of there. There's a yard locally that will sell me the stock trak-lok unit for $60. I'll probably put that in with the new clutches I have now, and start scouring the yards for a good rebuildable 31 spline unit that I can swap in later once I have money for good 31 spline axles. Thanks for the idea.
