Can someone help me identify this transmission... apparently my car started life as an auto...

It's a Tremec 3550 or Tremec TKO. The 3550 has a 10 spline input shaft and a 28 spline output shaft. The TKO will have a 26 spline input shaft and a 31 spline output shaft. It may also be a TKO-500/TKO-600, which is the newer model of the 3550 series. I don't know the specifics on the newer models off the top of my head. Good transmission to have either way. TTC claims much higher torque ratings for the TKO-500/TKO-600 series transmissions, But I've rebuild both the 3550 series and a TKO-600, and they are virtually identical inside.

well kind of confirming what I had a hunch of but the reason I'm asking is because I need a new transmission mount... someone gave me a t-5 mount and said "it has to be a t5" but when I went to bolt it up it was too wide where it bolts to the tranny.

I would be stoked. A 3550 is like a $1300 transmission new. That transmission is infinately stronger than a T-5.

I wouldn't be, if you're plannin' on puttin down any kind of REAL power, 3550's are garbage :notnice:

Not to mention, you can bolster the f**k out of even a BW T5 with the right parts. (billet thrust plate, steel bearing retainer, hardened input shaft, steel forks, etc.)

Tell that to my 3550. 8 years of 11 second passes, and 635 ft lbs of torque to the wheels. After 7 years I broke the input shaft and updated it to a TKO input shaft. And I chipped a tooth off a third gear. Other than that, it's been great. There aren't too many T-5s that will stand up to that.

Shifter mounting points are the same. That looks like a stock 3550 shifter to me, which isn't a very good shifter. I think the TKO-500 actually comes with a better shifter.

Nice "freebie". :D

I think they are a lot better then t5s hands down. Friend of mine power shifted his (if that is a 3550) stock one for a long time which is something I wouldn't dream of trying with a t5.

This is the problem with generalizations, I've been beating the tar out of my T5 since I got the car in 2000, haven't had an issue yet. If not for power shifting, my car would probably be a 13.5 ride. And not nearly as fun. :D

It is physically impossible to power shift an unmodified T-5 or 3550. You have to let off the throttle or push in the clutch, one or the other. If you are able to shift the transmission with the throttle to the floor without pushing in the clutch the lock rings are seriously damaged. The 3550 is quite a bit better than the stock T-5. I wouldn't want to try to run an 11 second quarter mile in my heavy arse sled with a T-5.

What you're referring to is beyond what I'd call powershifting. I'm talking about never letting off the skinny pedal while you shift, but using the clutch. The trans would have to have a dog-ring style synchro to allow you to shift without using the clutch under power. Maybe I missed the boat with my definition of powershifting, but I can tell you that I've been doing it since the summer of '01 when I put my MSD on. :)

Well poop, I used to do that in my Escort. I do that in my Mustang with the nitrous on. I've talked to the people at Liberty gear several times about having my 3550 faceplated. They say even if you do have a dog-tooth engagement system, the transmission itself is not strong enough for power shifting. You can powershift it, but it's going to break something in the tranny.
