Help identifying 8.8

Need some help identifying this 8.8 in a 1991 foxbody. I bought the car as a roller and didn’t have a chance to ask what the setup was in the rear. Not sure if I’m measuring right but from housing end to end but I measure 55 inches. Has disc brakes. Looks to be sn95 axles(has abs wheel). I’m trying to put a parts list together to get a new set of axles, spool, ring and pinion, and a set of new brakes and rotors. If possible, I would like to get a set of foxbody axles to narrow the rear end but keep the disc brakes and use an adapter. Let me know your thoughts and opinions on how I should set this up and what parts to order. I’ve attached some pictures as well.

F0 housing would indicate 1990+. Technically that housing would apply to all 90-98 Mustang 8.8s as there is no major technical difference between the housing itself.

Brakes are SN95 GT/V6. 10.5" solid rotors with 38mm varga calipers. Given the F0 housing, we can assume it's running 94-98 Sn95 axles in it.

If the axle tag is still on the diff housing cover, I could confirm and give you more info.


So what should I go with on axle length with c clip eliminators? Wanting it to be as narrow as possible but still keep disc brakes.

Not easy to run C-clip eliminators with the Sn95 disk brakes. Some machining of the housing will be required. Not a bolt-on affair.
 
The ABS exciter rings tells me someone spent some money having those put on the Strange axles. Brakes are off a 94-98 GT or V6 car as Mike mentioned. There are no anti-moan brackets so it could be a 86-93 housing with 94-99 style axles and brakes or a complete rear end out of a 94-98 GT with upgraded axles. Either way it makes zero difference as it looks to be complete.
 
Fox axle or SN axle length - the choice is a function of what your wheel offset is or will be.

If your looking to continue the drag race theme (or function) and wanting to upgrade your rear end, try a built 9" that you can get any width you want. Axles and gears will be much stronger.
 
I’ve seen plenty of 1600 hp cars on 8.8’s and not breaking them. IMO the key is using 9” ends, good internals, high spline axles, and you can narrow an 8.8 rear end. Will they hold as much as a built OEM 9”? That’s up for debate but when you already have the 8.8 I see zero reasons to build a 9”.

Manufactured 9” like a Strange, Moser, or Mark Williams are a different animal and a person is not concerned about the cost.

I think the 9" uses up a few more ponies to turn than a 8.8 and the 8.8 is also a little lighter.
Grab a 8.8 from a expedition, narrow it up, 9" ends, they have 31 spline axles IIRC cut to fit.
