ok, to make a long story short, i have a t-5 and it has no i.d tag, just casting numbers. i'm pretty sure it's a v-8 trans but i gotta be sure for my own sanity. is there an easy way with out opening this thing up and counting gear teeth to determine if it's a v-8 trans?
can i put it in first and rotate the out put shaft once and see how many times the in-put shaft spins?? i don't have the pilot beating yet.....is there a certain diameter the snout on the input shaft measures??
also, down the road i may get curious and open it just to check it out inside, is there anything obviouse i should look for?? it's supposed to be rebuild with 15,000 on it but, you know how that goes.......
any info appreciated..

yeah i'm a little ticked right now.....i think i got bent on this tranny.......the input snout measures 590 thousandths, he advertised it as coming from a 5.0 and listed the v-8 gear ratios.......so he either lied or didnt know what he had......
sooooooooo, assuming worst case and that i'm stuck with it......i assume theres no way it could have the v-8 ratio gears and still be running a 4 cyl input shaft correct???
can i get a new gear set and input shaft and be good to go or should i just find a local tranny shop to trade it in with????

I don't know the measurements off hand, but I'd heck them to make sure of what you have and then decide if you want to try it or get a V8 tranny. A 4-cylinder T5 can be rebuilt into a V8 version, but it requires a total rebuild...you might find another one cheaper.

yeah i'm a little ticked.my own fault, i should'nt have trusted this guy, but, we all get burned i guess...
he keeps trying to tell me he bought new gears for it and a tranny shop did it, maybe so, but then they ripped him off. he's convinced it's an 8 cyl trans because it ran an 11 something in the quarter and didnt break. he also told me theres no way it coulda ran 118 mph in 4th if it was a 4 cyl trans........4th gear is same in 8 cyl and 4 cyl trans, he doesnt know what he's talking about....i keep trying to tell him you cant run a 4cy input using a v-8 gear set...plust i marked the shafts, put the tranny in first, the shaft rotates almost 4 full turns, which would be a 3.97 first, a 4 cyl gear....he won't listen..so, i may end up getting hosed on this, even though he clearly stated and listed the 8 cyl gear ratio ( e bay, yeah yeah i know )....

Just out of curiosity if the ebay member was madstangparts you just got burned. He sold me a 4 cyl trans within the last month, but his account was taken away due to too many negative feedbacks. He may be selling under a different name, I hope this "seller" isnt the same guy. (He shipped out of Sacramento. Either way, it sounds like you definatly have a 4 cyl trans. Sucks...

this guys from florida.......
from what i've rad i'm almost certain you cant run a 4 cyl input to a v-8 gear set because the gear thats on the input shaft is different......plus like i said, i put the tranny in first, rotated the out put shaft one turn, and the input shaft turned almost exactly 4 times, witch would be a 3.97, not a 3.35.......i belive thats an accurate way to tell.
not to mention, said in the auction rebuilt with 15,000, then in his e mails arguing it's an 8 cyl tranny tells me it was in an 11 second drag car........lmao.....so it's probably about fried anyway.......i swear some people....
