Found a pretty nice underhood filter for my S-Trim, that I thought I’d share with you guys.

Since around 2001, I’ve been using a powerpipe with a cone filter in the fenderwell. The outlet pipe from my FMIC passes through the same fenderwell, so things get pretty cramped. Another problem is that the filter gets dirty very quickly. After about 5000 miles its filthy.

So I’ve been looking for an underhood filter for everyday use, and came across this one from K&N (RC-5040). Its pretty big and fills the space perfectly:

Now, I’ve always been a little reluctant to do this because of the notion of the filter receiving “hot” underhood air (the whole premise of cold air intakes). But in this case, the filter is so close to the front of the car, I think its gets plenty of fresh air while driving. For example, it was a pretty cold night tonight, and after my 40 mile commute from work I immediately opened the hood and felt the filter. The metal part of the filter that you see in the photo was ice cold, which tells me that it gets a lot of air at highway speeds. In fact I think one of those open bottem funnel filters would actually be ideal. I happen to have one -this one is made by Vibrant Racing:

I’m going to be comparing these filters at the track, along with no filter and a homemade direct ram air rig that I made. Probably none of this will make a difference in ET/MPH, but it’ll keep me temporarily entertained.

I suggest you use an S&B filter. K&N's have oil on them, and being sucked in its going to negatively effect performance and increase chances of detonation. I don't want to get into the filter argument, just my opinion.

I have a blow-thru set-up, and my maf is pretty far away from the filter (its just past the intercooler), so I'm not really worried about that. Also, there's no trace of any oil residue in any of the induction piping, and I've been using K&N filters on this car since 1999.

But generally, I understand your point. You just have to make sure the filter isn't over-oiled.

Have you noticed if you are making more boost with that set up over the powerpipe set up? I have the procharger pipe on mine and personally hate the small filter but I don't want to add any boost as I'm already pushing the limits of a stock engine.

Thats funny...I was thinking about doing this but was told it would suck hot air.

But then again the stock procharger pipe I have is like 2.5 inch and isnt sucking air from a better place.

I want to do it but theres a lot less room on my 96...I may haave to move the coolant resorvoir over like an inch to even get a filter on.
