high pitched whine

What is at the rear of the car that would produce a high pitched whine (squeal) while running? It sounds like its coming right from behind the license plate.
Are fuel pumps in the rear? Maybe they make the noise when going bad? I havent noticed any performance issues.
Any ideas?

Its a 97 GT, auto, flowmaster 40s, K&N filter, otherwise stock.

yeah thats the fuel pump, you can hear mine when standing behind the car at idle even with the o/r H and macs

So, is that just the way they are? Nothing to worry about?

mine has been like that for the past 7k miles, since i bought the car, no performance problems
