homemade cold air induction

after removing the elbow, i had to do something about my old cold air induction. so i decided to try making a custom home made one and see how much cheaper it would be. i also wanted to put the mass air in the fenderwell too. so i went to lowes and bought some 2 feet of the thick 3 inch I.D. pvc, one 45degree elbow and one rubber connector bend. i also got a male brass hose connector and a rubber grommet while i was there. when i got home i put the rubber connector on the throttle body and mocked up the pvc to see how long it needed to be. cut the pvc put it on and then put the 45 elbow on the end. after about 30 min of cutting and reassembling i got it to fit. i put the filter and mass air in the fenderwell and mocked it up and positioned it so it would fit. i didnt have to make the hole into the fenderwell any bigger. then took the rubber grommet i bought. i took the act sensor in with me to find the right grommet for the sensor. took a 7/8s paddle drill bit and drilled the hole where i wanted it, put the grommet in, superglued it in actually and screwed the act sensor in. then drilled one more hole for the hose from the valve cover, tightened it up and put it all together. then after all was said and done, put 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of silver spray paint on the pvc. all in all i spent about 25 bucks.

How "well" does your t-body mounted like that work?????

I do not think I have ever seen one like that...much less running like that?

there may have been a few horses that show up on the dyno, maybe not. throttle response is certainly better with the tb the way it is. you can feel the difference there but that is about it.

thanks for the compliment. it is fun!!! and way way way cheaper too!!! if i have the materials available and tools around i try to make anything i can. its seems to be pretty functional. the main reason is cause my ebay cai had gotten in kinda bad shape as far as the silicone connectors so i researched homemade ones and i liked the way our cai had the mass air in the fenderwell so i made my own.

lol thanks, it seems to work really well. it has better throttle response than with the elbow. any rwhp gains i couldnt tell ya. i liked the idea of doing a fox tb swap but didnt want to buy a fox tb, then have to go to a junkyard and find a throttle cable and tps sensor connector. i took the plenum off and dissassembled the elbow and tb from the upper and looked at the mounting holes, lined it up the the center hole, drilled the new holes, got a sheet of 1/8 thick aluminum and cut to the shape of the flange for the tb, then cut the center hole out. then matched it up to the new holes for the new tb. instead of studs, i just used a bolt and ran it through the intake manifold and bolted the tb on it. the aluminum piece was used to block off the egr passage below the main hole. i also made the bracket for the throttle cable to mount to. after making some adjustments to the throttle cable it works great.

As for the bottom line on money spent

Like you said ... You ain't got but a little bit in the entire effort
so
If it don't work out all that well

You can always go back to OEM
or
Do as others do ... Buy something ready made

I have an explorer non-internal EGR intake so I would not need the block off plate.

I like the idea. I thought of it but never thought it would work....

I really like the idea that 1 t-body could be used both ways. since I would have to kill my EGR if I went with a fox t-body swap anyway I might just make the setup like yours.

i think its easier then making the fox tb swap because you dont have to mess with wiring or a new cable. the only difficult part is drilling the new holes for the tb. the cable bracket was pretty easy.

I'm assuming you had to lengthen the IAC and TPS sensor wires?

I don't know who I am talking to and yes I did actually check to see when the last time he was on. I don't understand why folks have a problem with someone bringing back an old post I don't give a damn if it was a million years old LMFAO
