Hood Flew Up

So my hood flew up on me @50 mph when I was driving yesterday, the damage is minimal I think haven't looked inside to much. My question is the metal pieces next to the grill/vent on either side got hit and are slightly damaged but the vent itself got trashed is the metal under the vent supposed to be flat or not? Will post pics later stuck @ work right now

Yikes. That is an extremely difficult spot to repair. If you have good welding abilities you can get it done, but a collision shop will typically total out the car.

Steel, the damage isn't horrible so I think I will try to fix it p as much as I can paint it again and call it good

That really sucks. The metal under the vent should be flat. Usually, if you take out the wiper linkage you may be able to get under the dent. This is the reason why I take the front bumper off to line up hoods on foxes....and, personally, I use hood pins. Post picks if you can. A lot of folks here have bunches of experience fixing stuff like that. Good luck

sorry to hear that man. DId the latch break or just give way? Never heard of a steel hood coming up unless the latch wasn't aligned properly.

That area of the car is a bitch to fix. You will most likely have to cut the cowl section out and weld new donor piece in. Post some pics.... and get hood pins.

It just gave way, hood was always slightly off but didn't move or show signs of not latching well...I had hood pins just hadn't gotten around to it.....more mad that everytime I fix something a new problem arrives the immediate second I fixed the last problem

Ahh, the joys of daily driving a 25-year-old plus, car.

this has happened more than a buzillion times. There a replacement cowl section for sale on my foxbody mustang parts facebook page. It would still require cutting and welding though

A good body shop can fix it with a stud puller and some body work skimming. A cowl hood would've done more damage. No reason to replace the whole cowl. That top sheet metal actually goes behind the windshield where it spot welds to lower portion. Its way more involved to replace the whole cowl. A good body man could fix it and paint the upper cowl. Sucks man but at least you didn't crash when it flew up.

No cutting or welding needed. I'll dig up some pics that shows what's needed like @90sickfox said about a puller. I had the same damage on my old T-top 5.0

Here you go. Just sand the area down to the metal, use a stud welder to weld the studs on in the deepest parts of the dent, do only a few at a time, use a slide puller gently to pull the dents up, weld more studs as necessary until surface is mostly flat. The rest is smoothed with a hammer and dolly. The very center part where the wiper is poking out of can easily be pulled up by hand.

Ya I have had lots of experience with things breaking while riding, and crashing etc so the one good thing is I can easily remain calm in those conditions now haha, how much would you think a shop would charge me as I did a quick search and that weld gun would cost around $500 is looks like, maybe better to just find a shop?

see if you can rent one from Taylor rent all. My guess is a body shop will quote you near $1000 to repair and paint that

At least 1k ...been my experience with body shops. Can you turn it into insurance? Pay the Deductible and have it professionally done?

My 2 cents- unless the amount of damage is far above your deductable, pay it out of pocket and do not report it. Your insurance premiums will most likely go up and you will also be rated higher as making a claim. Claims- wether at fault or not or all captured and used for calculations when you go for insurance.

Be careful with insurance. If the quote from the body shop is more than book value your car may be totaled out. A friend of mine had a fender binder in a 91 Lx true 5.0...the body shop gave an estimate for a new bumper, header panel, fender, lower control arm, and paint. It was somewhere around 2k.... They totaled it and wouldn't let him buy it back. These cars are starting to pull good money at auction so companies are reluctant to allow buy backs.
