How big is the Nut in the Center of the Balancer

It's going to be hard to do it by hand, from what I remember it helps if you get a long wrench and put it on the bolt, and lean it against the ground, then bump the starter and it should break it loose.
If you do the starter trick just make sure you dont turn it the wrong way. lol
And yea, Im pretty sure its a 15/16th.

Using an impact is a dream. I had to remove mine, AFTER I pulled the tranny out already. LOL A couple of trigger squeezes and it's off. 
And yes it will turn.... I took the dust shield off and ran a rope to the converter and drain plug hole in the bellhousing when I couldn't use an impact.

I live in a townhouse. I'm sure my neighbors hate mine.... but I sure do love them. 
To be able to remove the nut on an alternator you are holding in your hand (and without it spinning)... AND in less than 2 seconds. Priceless.

The guys are right - impact it. The starter bump should work as a last resort (I hate that method). Definitely PB that bolt first.
If your car is still together, you could have a shop loosen the bolt. Then you tighten it just enough to get home and remove it at home (now not so stuck).
To address the rear wheel stuff, the converter slips (unlike an engaged clutch), which is where Dan's issue is coming from. That's why Paul did what he did with the rope.

This is what I did, before I had air tools:
Raise the front of the car on jack stands, like you were going to change the oil. Remove the dust shield on the tranny. Run a plastic rope through the bolt ends of the converter and tie it to the bellhousing where the drain plug has a rubber pop out seal on the bottom. It held mine just fine.

When I had the AODE in my car, I got the breaker bar on the nut, and got it in a good position to whack at it with a big rubber mallet.
I kept having to rotate it to a good position to hit it, but I was able to get it loose that way.

Yeah I wound up getting the nut loose....but when it came to putting the puller on, and yes I took off the big washer to...When I would tighten the puller, the balancer would spin too...so today was just a huge disaster...I think i might just get my car towed down to a mustang shop by me and just let them do it...the funny part is I had everything up unto taking the nut and harmonic balancer off ready at 11 this morning
