I once removed my EGR vavle and installed a plate for my throttle stuff to mount on. The car ran fine but I only ran it at the track (old combo, old notchback) well I still have that plate laying around and was thinking if I go to an explorer intake, or cobra I may want to do that same plate thing again for my throttle linkage. I didnt run a chip or anything before......and DOnt remember having any problems with idle, etc.....but how many of you are going EGR less on the street and how does it effect your cars?
thanks
Jack

I just changed back to EGR. The car ran decent but I couldn't advance my timing at all without getting detonation. Also since I was thinking about going FI I figured that I needed to go back to EGR.

If you want to go with no EGR let me know. I have a GT40 upper intake, ported explorer lower and an EGR delete plate for the TB to bolt up to for sale.

I removed my egr when I changed motors, so I can't help with real world fuel economy consequences. However, all of the theory is there to support that conclusion.
I would like to hear of peoples experiences on this. I plan on reinstalling the egr fairly soon, and have been keeping very close tabs on my economy, so I should have some reliable results.

I have been without egr for a few years now with several 351w combos. I don't seem to have drivability issues, and only have the CEL problem. From what I have heard the consequences of removing the egr seem to be hit or miss. Some do just fine others don't fair as well.

i wonder if that has anything to do with automatic computers and manual? Also for the one's with EGR removed.......are you running cats or smog pump still? ..........I see many turbo and blower cars with a pump used to pull air from the crankcase.....to better seal the rings? Or something else?

EGR and the AIR system are independant.

Jack, I think you are referring to an Evacuation or scavenging pump.

Interesting, the computer could have something to do with it. Especially if the timing curves are different?
Also, compression ratio. Coolant/oil temps, maybe. H/C/I combo?
Compression ratio is probably the big one though. Mines in my sig. pretty low.

I do not have cats currently. That will be changing fairly soon though, as I will have to pass emissions next summer.

I have wondered if a stock smog pump could work as a crankcase vac pump. It has been several years since I have seen the stock pump though. Is there a provision for an inlet hose? They are also used when low tension rings are used.

Does it have internal EGR on it? What "kind" of gt40 upper intake is it?

It is a GT40 tubular upper. The problem with the EGR is that the internal EGR tube is cracked and broken on the upper. I tapped out the lower and upper and installed some 3/8" or 1/2" threaded plugs to block off the EGR. I have the EGR delete plate that does away with the EGR spacer.

jackchan I shot ya pm about the intake.

Glad to hear you're reinstalling your EGR! A couple of years ago I capped off the EGR valve without turning EGR off in the computer like the guys above when I put my LT headers on (the LTs didn't have the EGR bung), and my car pinged like crazy, and mileage did go down a little as well. When I did my fox TB conversion I installed the Fox EGR setup and the car stopped pinging and mileage improved. IMO EGR is a good thing, and since there are no performance gains from deleting it my advice to everyone is to keep it.

one of the reasons i deleted mine the first go round was that I had access to a 65mm tb but no spacer so thats why I deleted it.......to save on having to buy the EGR spacer. I may do the same thing this go round. Depends on how it drives. I'm wanting a chip burning software so I can burn my own chips.....but will have to see how it all plays out.
Thanks

thats the exact reason i deleted mine. i got a tb for cheap but no EGR spacer. i didn't wanna spend more money on the spacer so i deleted it
