how many qts of oil fill your v8??

Well, i learned something today. Wonder what the idea of going from 6 qts to 5 qts and back to 6 qts was?

Walmart and AutoZone also carry the FL-820S filter. Mine takes 6 quarts.

No reason to run 10wANYTHING in these motors.. doesn't need that thick of oil at startup to maintain good pressure.. especially living in AZ. Should be running 5w20 in winter, and if you insist, 5w30 in summer. That extra weight at cold startup is probably only making it harder for your crank to plow through the oil.

6 quarts of 5w30. theres no internal differences between 4.6 motors calling for 5w30 or 5w20. ive built both.

WHat happened to the 99 model?

I use 5.5 of Mobil 1, 5w-20

My local WalMart no longer carries Motorcraft filters, so I buy the Napa Gold filter (Made by Wix), at Napa.

that's what is odd. I changed the oil last night in my '02 and with 5 qt's it's about an 1/8in. below the full mark. This is with the Motorcraft filter.

Not necessarily. Depends what weight it takes to maintain good oil pressure at hot idle. Cars that have been cared for, followed good maintenance schedule, etc, can easily run the factory recommended weight throughout the vehicles entire lifetime. Obviously, since it's been established that the switch to 5w20 was simply for the CAFE thing, not many people will probably continue to run it after the warranty expires.

That being said, I still stick by my original statement that there's no need to run a 10wX in our engines.

Yes, of course it depends on how the engine has been treated over time.

It is due to the super high tolerances in our engines so that the oil can flow properly.

Refill with 6 qts and ignore the dipstick "full" mark . . . don't add any more. Ford issued a TSB in 2003 to explain this, because even the dealers were overfilling 4.6L engines. Evidendly Ford decided to use the same dipstick across multiple engines (I suppose to save $$), so the historic markings are no longer accurate.

2001 GT 04/21 engine build date.

I use 5 quarts with a motorcraft filter and it comes to 1/8 inch under the max line

Keep in mind that different filters have different capacities... not
much, but different. I stick with Motorcraft FL-820S and MC 5w-20
oil (semi-synthetic!). MC makes a great filter. They've got all the
right stuff in there.

Also, if you want to be a total "oil freak", fill your new filter with
new oil before installing it.

steps to switch to synthetic oil

1. support vehicle on jack stands or ramps or lift
2. drain old oil into container
3. replace oil filter
4. tighten drain plug and oil filter
5. add synthetic oil
6. check level
7. recycle old oil

thats it, nothing else is needed.

I put 5 and it barely touched the hash marked area. 6 took it to just below the top end of the hash marked area. I changed the oil in my car for the first time... at 65,174 miles.

So are we positive on the 99-01's using 5 quarts..? I put 5 in mine, and it shows full on the dipstick, but others with 99-01's use 6 quarts... wtf. Mine also consumes a little between changes, around 3/4 a quart at the 3k mark.

Oh, and our dipsticks are possibly the worst ever made. First off, they never go in straight. 2nd, since they dont go in straight it gets oil all over the inside of the dipstick tube and screws me up when im trying to read the oil level, since there is now oil all over the dipstick...
