Hi, I'm new to the board and haven't really played with Fords that much. I was wondering how stout is an 8.8 rear end from an 87 to 93 5.0 mustang? If I was running say.... 450 horse in a 3000 LBS car, will it grenade on me? Thanks

The housings are very strong. The axles and diff are another story. It all depends how you drive your car. Personally, I would get stronger axles, a posi rear end, and a girdle. I bought a pair of 31 spline Superior axles, a Eaton posi and a trick flow rear end girdle. I'm not worried about anything in the rear breaking, all I'm worried about now is my block and trans, haha.

As with pretty much every question like this "how strong is X and will X support Y power?"...it all depends on how you drive it. If you are nice to it, it will be fine. If you put on slicks and do 4000+RPM drops, it will break.

well, the only thing I can add is I know jeep guys love and must throw a Ford 8.8 on to run those giant rock/mudd climbing tires. The guys beat the hell of of there jeeps with all the mountain climbing and mudd slinging.

He speakeths the truth.
Matter of fact mine just blew last night :D
Guess 28 spline axles wernt meant to take a beating from 420+rwtq w/ ET Streets.

One of the questions i've been trying to figure out for awhile is how strong the stock 28 spline count with aftermarket axles are?
Stronger than stock, at least. Installed a pair of Superior axles from Summit, and Moroso studs, new bearings and seals. Launched at 4500-5000rpm approx 80times this summer, and my stock rebuild diff still works fine. Only added two extra friction disk, and new oil. Raceweight of my car is 1590kg.
Of caurse, a new 31-33 spline unit is better, but the stock part aint that bad. Just Me. :)

people have gone 10's on the stock rear end, just as people have gone 10's on the stock t-5, seems like most people start breaking both around the high 11's low 12's depending on how yu druve it
