Install gears with the cam gear dot all the way at the bottom and the crank gear all the way on top so both dots are in line with each other. This is the easy cheap way, if you want it real precise you need to degre it.

some gear sets have a 3 key ways on them,so you just line up different marks.i suggest either you find direction or call cloyes, some sets need the marks dot to dot and other are both at the top or bottom.
Put crank gear on with the +4 notch on the crank key. Notice that the +4 lettering is offset a little from the actual keyway(notch) that is cut in the crank gear. Then without the chain on, install both gears, and line up the +4 lettering on the crank gear with the dot on the came gear. Take it apart without moving anything, put it all back together. Turn the crank so the key is sitting at TDC, and you'll see the cam gear dot will be slightly ahead in rotation, giving you you're advance. The absolute best way to do this is with a degree wheel. This is a tough thing to get exactly right by guessing, with the motor in the car, especially if you haven't done it before. REMEMBER: check your piston/valve clearance before you crank that engine.
