How Would I Like A Jeep Cherokee?

Grand Cherokees got the not-so-great chrysler transmissions. Small cherokees don't use chrysler auto trannies, and are just as bulletproof as the 4.0 that they sit behind...

I second this.
my brothers 95 jeep grand Cherokee has had nothing but transmission problems since he bought it in 97.

But the engine is solid.
in fact, its been sitting for three years until this past monday.

A quick oil and filter change, fresh rear gear oil, fuel filter, plugs and drain and refill of the fuel tank and i started it right up, idling silky smooth.

I will be replacing the water pump/tstat/rad cap and coolant this weekend.
Coolant looked funky.

Thank you for the information. :nice:

Do you know, by chance, who did make the transmissions, then?

Aisin Warner...AW4

This is a paragraph I found on howstuffworks.com

"Take for instance the Aisin Warner AW4 transmission. This automatic transmission, found in Jeeps and Toyotas among others, holds something of a legendary status. The stories surrounding the longevity of this car part speak to the proverbial bullet-proof transmission, one that can run without lubrication and at high temperatures for unconscionable lengths of time. It can take punishment that would make a lesser transmission weep and seize. In short, all efforts to kill it will end in failure. It simply can't be stopped."

Is that for a Wrangler or Cherokee or both?

My Cherokee is a Sport and didn't realize what might have been different about it.

Never mind...read that was the manual.
