I am a classic lurker to this site (and have been for about 5 years) and have but maybe a handful of posts, usually just read everyone else posts but my project is finally done and i picked it up on Friday from the Mustang Shop.

I have a 97 Cobra ( i have owned for 6 years) the project entailed the following:

VT Engines Shortblock (9.8 compression, diamond Pistons blah, blah, blah)
Vortech S-Trim (3.12" pulley)
SHM A/A Intercooler
60lbs/hr injectors
4.10 gears
Hooker Longtubes
SCT Tuned Chip

That's basically it anyhow i blew the engine 2 years ago when i first installed the supercharger (before i got it tuned by Matt). Sent the shortblock to VT for rebuild with forged internals and then reassembled over the past year or so. I did all the mechanical work (except for the bypass valve setup Matt fought with) and the final numbers it turned out with Matt at the Mustang Shop were:

445 hp @ 6900rpm
365 torque @ 6000rpm

Anyhow i'm pumped i havent driven the car since May 2004 which has been tought to swallow but it is the craziest fuggin thing i have ever driven or been in. I know there are plenty of cars out there that make this kind of power but i have been my own mechanic and fabricator for the most part which is why it took 2 years.... lol.

Anyhow just had to release all my excitement somewhere after it's finally done and running like a champ. I have to give big props to Matt at the Mustang Shop he is unbelelieveable with tuning and anything related to how cars like these run and without him i never would have got the car running right after i assembled it.

If you see a Cobra around Saskatoon with side exhaust listen for a whistle....

Later,
Ryan

Nice wheels man I think I have the other car Matt tuned just after yours. Mine put down 430@ 6200 and 384 lb/ft @ 5200, but I have belt slip issues with the P-1 and I may not have enough injector. But congrats on your build, if you're in the Hat I'm the only Rio Red Cobra in town.

Your very welcome Ryan :)
Glad to hear your frown has turned into a **** eating grin! She felt great on the street... Besides the severe lack of traction lol..

It'd be a great idea to get a wb o2 sensor to monitor the fueling since you're much lower than we are in calgary, though the fueling change at your altitude should be minor..

Only a tuning dork like myself would get excited over dashpot ;)

Feel free to contact me if you've got any questions.
Cheers,
Matt

Shredded Belt

Hey Matt,

I took a buddy for a ride on Saturday and we got back and i heard a noise so we popped the hood and we noticed the drive belt was frayed. Upon further investigation we noticed that on the power steering pulley the belt had jumped off the pully by one rib therefor rubbing on something making the belt fray. Anyhow the belt continued to pull apart when i took my wife to Walmart later that day, so i got a new belt(goodyear Gatorback) and am going to put it on tomorrow. I think the belt jumped because of several things:

a) too much power
b) the belt was at least three years old and had never been used
c) i drove the car like i was running from the poilce and specifically i jammed it into second one time and i think that was a little too abrupt.

Anyhow i am going to check the alignment and if it is a reoccuring problem put a steel tensioner on...

Any other ideas?

Ryan

Hey there, i seen your car at TMS while Matt had it.
Nice car, i really like the spoiler:nice:

Too much power, i don't think so.

A new belt just sitting around shouldn't be a problem, i can see if it was kept outside and not in the house but if it was soft and plyable it should have been fine.

I like guess (c) if you bang gears around back and forth the stock style tensioners once getting old and spring inside weaken can't keep up the tension. Changing engine speed and load very fast like that can cause this issuse with a weak tensioner.

The other thing to check would be s/c bracket bolts and idler pulley if you have one.
Go over all the pulleys with a straight edge and check alignment.

Jesse.

Sounds like Matts had fun with a few of our cars over the last year :D . Matt my dialing fingers getting itchy, I need to get my fix, haven't bought anything in a few months and am going into withdrawl.

What he said...
New tensioner, and a new belt that short enough that its a huge pain in the ass to get on ;) That'll leave less room for the tensioner to load up during the quick changes in rpm observed while driving the piss outta her ;)

If you make too much money and need another tool, gates has a lazer guided pulley alignment tool.

I thought you were smarter- There's no such thing as too much power ;)

Did you ever check those cams? Your car was the only one this year that had me scratching my head...
I know that your combo has alot of potential..

Figures, it always happens to me :nonono: . I'm gonna pull her apart in a few weeks here and check it out. Still am down on boost, (only seeing 10# on a 14# pulley), have a small coolant leak somewhere(thinking/hoping intake manifold gasket), think a lifter is going, and still have that exhaust poping from too much fuel somewhere. You'll be seeing her before next spring for sure :D .

Your right there is no such thing as too much power, i'm not sure where i was going with that guess i don't think i completed the thought.

Hey Matt i put a new belt on and everything seemed great but i gave a firend a ride and i pounded on it pretty good but i didn't power shift or anything but i rolled through to the top of third and then headed back and checked under the hood and the belt had hopped over a rib on the supercharger pulley.

The more i think about it i think it is definetly the tensioner, however it would be nice to check the alignment although i'm not sure how it would be out. I've read about the new steel tensioners that Ford sells which sound like the answer except it sounds like instead of a square 1/2" hole to pull on you use the nut on the back of the pulley and it tends to round (which i tend to believe because of the angles under there). Can you get me a tensioner? I may modify it once i get one so i can use a square 1/2" ratchet end in it.

It's something i'd like to fix over the winter so i can put the hammer down in the spring, right now with the pavement being so cold and my nearly bald 315's getting traction at 4000 is a chore let alone 7,000.. I havent read much about 8-rib other than it sounds like a fair chunk of change when do guys usually go to 8-rib?

Later,
Ryan
