Uhh... i dont think so buddy. Stock for stock any year gt gets killed. Now with the head swap and gears u might have a chance if the lt1 is stock. But who's stock now and days anyway. if the lt1 has gears and exhaust and lets say a cai he's running low 13's if not 12's if he can drive. I have seen plenty of lt1's in the 12's without touching the heads cam or intake. (I live in michigan, home of the dream cruise, so i've seen plenty) U are going to have to spend wisely and drive the spit out of ur car to consistantly beat a f-body. I know i'm about to get blasted with hate replies but the truth hurts.

No, being proved worng hurts. You are referring to the ls1, not the lt1.That was not the question. As for the stock for stock thing, why would you do a pi swap on a 99+?From what i have researched, the stock lt1 was running around 14.5, which should be no problem for a 99+ GT

yea if the lt1 is stock which he clearly is not. But he has a 96, which is bull if u ask me.Okay I'm not talking about stock lt1's. They respond very well to simple bolt on's. the lt1 i use to race just exhaust and lingerfilter cai and free mods beat me by 3 cars. thats with a 4l60e. Okay i was spinning but i was stock as well. He gave me a car and put 2 more on me. The only one i raced that ran like that so hey factory freak. But they do run good b/c a f-body is probably going to the next car i buy. So to each his own. But i love u guys anyway even if u disagree.

Well, stock Stangs below '99 will get spanked by LT1's. Your only chance is a 99+ GT, but still LT1's out horsepower and Torque the GT. However, gears will do wonders for the GT!

here's a list i was thinking about completing when i had my 1996 GT.

PI heads w/ cams
Steeda Pullies
Longtube headers (the power gains are worth it) w/ mid pipes and your choice of muffflers
410 in the rear
Drag Radials for sure (with the new power and 410's you don't want to stay spinning and lose again)

i'm assuming with the new heads and cams you will need a new computer or tuned chip etc... that will probably advance the timing for you.. so you don't need a Timing Adjuster.

you'll be in the 13's for sure.. while stock LT1's run the same as a Stock 99+ GT.

the amount you would spend to get up to par would make a HUGE down-payment on an 03-04 Cobra...

yeah 96-98 turd's shouldn't even be considered mustangs, kinda like the way we look at v-6's.

my times = 85* 90% humidity, no tune, bad fuel gremlin somewhere. (thinking it's teh regulator)

turd's are useless and are never faster than 99+ cars.

So with the PI heads and PI intake ill gain 45rwhp? That's nice! Does anyone know how fast do stock 96GT run in the 1/4 mile?

Don't forget to compare engine size! The Mustang 281 is 69 cubes smaller than the LT1 350. So what if you get beaten... you can just laugh away because you were probably right on his ass. Oh, and there is a reason that Mustangs are still around and in it's own musclecar class. Like it or not, the Mustang shut the Camaro/Firebird out of the competition. It's not just the power that makes a car, it's the looks, dependability, and appeal that sets us Mustang owners apart from our competition. Let's not forget the heritage and records set long ago. That's enough to make me proud to have a Mustang and glad to NOT have a LT1.....

No. I gained 25 RWHP with '03 Romeo heads, cams, and intake. I was told with a good SCT tune I could pick up another 10 to 20 horsepower. I have an auto so I lose a little more power, but with a 5 speed you could make more than 25 at the wheels I would imagine. You pick up a lot more power where you need it too. My peak hp used to be 189 @ 4100 RPMs and at 5500 RPMs I dropped to 140hp.
Now I'm at 189hp @ 3900 RPMs and at 5500 RPMs I'm now up to 205hp. So at 5500 RPMs I gained 65hp over my old power band.
If this makes any sense. All, in all the heads are worth it, all your future mods will take to them better.
As for how fast stock '96s run, I ran a 15.4 bone stock with my auto. A lot of people I have talked to run similar 15s. Obviously the 5 speeds are a little faster.

I should have worded that differently. Yes, it is possible to pick up 45 RWHP. I would not go into this swap expecting that much though.

Im a newbie so dont flame me, but i have a dumb question. If an 98 mustang has 225hp and a 99+ has 260hp, how come with 35hp worth of mods, (bolt-ons or whatever), a 98Gt will not run similiar times as a 99+???? Meaning that once a 98 has 260hp, they are still slower than a 99+???

the 96-98s are heavier i do believe but they also get a bump in compression over a PI motor!

im not taking about a pi swap, im mean with just basic bolt-ons like a midpipe, cai, tb, plenum....etc.... that once a 98gt has 260 or more hp that it is still slower than a 99+?

I dont think your going to pick up 35 horsepower in bolt ons. With the headswap you will be at the '99 power level or close by. 260 hp is at the fly wheel. At the rear wheels '99 and new are putting down less hp. I'd say probably close to 210-220 range. '96-'98 probably put down like 180-190 at the wheels. When you hear our hp #s at 225 thats what the motor is pumping out I think its like 15% loss for 5 speeds and like 20% loss for autos through the drivetrain. Dont quote me on all these numbers though. With just a headswap you should in theory have more power, because you would have the same everything but you would have a 10:1 compression and the '99&+ would have 9:1. There is also computer mumbo jumbo. Our cars are setup for the heads they come with, the '99s are set up for their PI heads so with the correct tune you'll be right there.

well, unless LT-1 has some bolt ons...
My 93 Z-28, which is an early LT-1, coupled with A/T is putting out 230hp(bone stock, right down to the paper filter) at the rear wheels, which is about same as what my 99 Mustang 5Spd would put out at the wheels, so with PI swap, you'll end up where my Z-28 isright now.
If LT-1 got some simple bolt ons, such as LT headers, straight pipe, good exhaust, LT-4 intake manihold and LT-4 cam(well, cam isn't really bolt on i guess), and computer chip, they will run low 13's easy....

i wish my car had more cubicinches.....

because your 35rwhp mods are ricer math. every car is different and responds slightly different. because mod A gave you 10rwhp on a stock car and mod B gave you 8rwhp on a stock car doesn't mean both together equals 18hp to the wheels.

bench racing blows.

i wish i could find the site with the headswapped car vs. PI car from a dig on the street. the PI car got him out of the hole bad (better drivering) but around 90-100mph the swapped car pulled past him. the compression bump is significant.

about the lt-1 debate, anyone can say they have seen this they have seen that. Yes, you have seen this and that, but in real life how many of the cars that looked identical but have crappy drivers or not running up to potential? For every 10 street driven 5.0's, 4.6PI GT's and even LT-1's half of them or less are modded, even fewer are even cracking 13's.

Driving is like sex, because everyone can do it, everyone thinks they are great at it.
