Well I really need to replace my bearing retainer. The retainer the bearing rides on has broke off and just sits in the case loosely. Might have something to do with my clutch problems...

Anyways, once I figure out which bearing retainer I need (95 t5 is what I have in my 1993 Lx...) I want to know how to properly install it.

It looks pretty straightforward besides a couple parts.

Now it says use endplay shims are what you use and to get them at a Ford dealership...where is another place I can get them? This dealership over here charges way to much for everything:nono: Do extras come with the retainers?

Do I just add up the two measurements from each retainer (so a total of 4 measurements) and then subtract the difference to see what I need to shim?

It's not the pilot bearing...that is fine. Good idea though...

I just need to know what measurements I need to take exactly (from what points) and where to get the endplay shims...
 
the best way is not to measure it out, keep trying different shim sums until you get no endplay and as little drag when spinning the shaft as possible

edit: a micrometer will come in very handy when trying to find the right cmbination of shims

FYI- im 99% sure you would use the fox retainer, unless you have a 94-95 bellhousing, clutch, clutch fork, TOB, etc.
 
Euphoric - Thanks, I'm going to get the part number off the current retainer on there and get the same one.

Explain to me the endplay....what exactly am I looking for here?

no problem.... try less shims first, and if you can wiggle the end of the input shaft laterally (side to side) then there is not enough shim. if you can go in intervals of .01 inch, tightening down the retainer bolts each time (dont need to torque them all the way). when you hit the point of no endplay, try .01" more shim, and see if you can feel the difference in drag on the shaft when you spin it. ideally you want no endplay and as little drag as possible.

there is also an axial play that you are trying to avoid, but really if you get the lateral endplay right, there is no axial play (slack in the input shaft going on the same axis as the shaft)



your idea about the part number is a good one, but i can't remember seeing a part number on the retainer :shrug:
 
Seems to me that endplay is the movement of the input shaft longitudinally (as if trying to pull the input shaft out of the bearing retainer), not side to side play.

:stupid: I've always thought of it that way. I dont believe shims would help tolerances laterally. Regardless I didn't use any shims and mines been fine for 40k miles or so. I definatly would recommend them though.
 
I know my input shaft can move quite a bit from "side to side"...but I tried some older trannies sitting around and they had similar play from side to side:shrug:

i suppose you're right, because the pilot bearing is there to stop any lateral movement, but it seemed when we were shimming my tranny that both lateral and endplay both went away at the same shim, so we figured that you should stop both.


5spd... if your tranny has any good amount of miles on it, or you feel it's going out at all, rebuild kits come with shims and you'll have a nice new transmission.... if not, try checking out ddperformance.com or calling them and seeing what they can do...
 
Euphoric...I would love to do that but funds are very slim. Not enough to warrant the rebuild labor. Sometime later...maybe.

It has probably around 120k on it.

If so many have changed their bearing retainers...just curious where they got their bearings.

I'll atleast, at minimum, reuse the shim(s) that were in the old one and go from there. I know it will atleast be better than a broke one:)
 
i'll tell you 1 thing...if you don't shim it properly, you'll get to hear bearing noise :D

i swapped my factory bearing retainer for a new steel one, and I just re-used everything since it was a junkyard tranny that i really didn't care about, and, well, all you listen to is that front bearing spinning away.(you know, the one that's retained by the retianer).

my advice, take your time & measure properly...this has nothing to do with endplay or side-to-side movement i don't think. If the bearing isn't properly seated in the race, your hear it spinning (almost like a bad t/o bearing)

oh-well, good-luck and follow the car craft article. order the shims from D&D since i went to the dealer and asked for them, and the guy looked at me like i had a d1ckfor on my head
 
The retainer is installed almost tight.. I believe the endplay is supposed to be like .007-.009... Like I said.. "almost tight" It would seriously be easier to take it to a tranny shop and let them swap it for 20 bucks. Cheap insurance.
