If you have changed bearing retainers, I have questions for you...

i'll tell you 1 thing...if you don't shim it properly, you'll get to hear bearing noise :D

i swapped my factory bearing retainer for a new steel one, and I just re-used everything since it was a junkyard tranny that i really didn't care about, and, well, all you listen to is that front bearing spinning away.(you know, the one that's retained by the retianer).

my advice, take your time & measure properly...this has nothing to do with endplay or side-to-side movement i don't think. If the bearing isn't properly seated in the race, your hear it spinning (almost like a bad t/o bearing)

oh-well, good-luck and follow the car craft article. order the shims from D&D since i went to the dealer and asked for them, and the guy looked at me like i had a d1ckfor on my head
:bs: Thats my KB Blowzilla :rlaugh:

I just did this today. I swapped out my 84 tranny that has a steel retainer and moved it over to an 89 tranny that did not. I had one shim onder each bearing race. One looked to be a hair thicker than the other.

I tried the retainer with the thicker shim and everything was fine with a small bit of lateral play. There was no longitudinal play. the shaft turned smooth. This is with snugging two bolts of the retainer.

I tried the smaller shim and it seemed to me there was a little too much play. I tried both shims, and the shaft now did not turn. Definitely not right.

So PuteramI, you went with the "thicker shim" huh? So basically go by feel if nothing else.
Yep. Where there is a hair of play and the shaft is still easy to turn. I kinda feel-measured before I started everything and it feels the same afterwards. My first tranny lasted a quarter of a million miles this way. I figure this one should last a few as well.
