Im very sorry for this thread - Im fearing the gear

Hey guys
The time has come where I can finally get gears! woopee....
Anyway, I found a shop that will do 3:73's installed for 370 including the gear, and 4:10's for 400 installed.
The guy told me that with my auto they strongly recommend 4:10's.
I really would like the best SOTP feeling, so I guess I want to go with 410's too.
Is this too much gear for my dd?
Just say no....and reassure me. I know you guys are sick of this question anyway.

Mine is a 5-speed and I have a 4.10 gear and I love it. I drive it 3-5 times a weeks and have driven long distances also. At 70 mph it just gets past the Flowmaster drone, so its not annoying. I think if I would have went with 3.73's that I would be right in the drone. I also think our heavier cars need more gear.

Man, have you opened a can of worms. There's always a "spirited" discussion on the "right" gear to use. From what I've seen, the camps are split between 3.73's and 4.10's for auto trannies, with a few choosing other gear ratios. In the end, it's really up to you, 'cause your "best" SOTP feeling is different than everyone else's. I don't really think you can go wrong with either one.

Also remember that you're going to need a chip (or a SpeedCal) to adust your speedometer to read properly again. A chip would be better, so you can have your tranny shift points adjusted too.

do it. i wish i had done 4.10's in my car with the T5... and I drive 100 miles a day, 40 of these on the highway (80ish) and the rest at about 50-60...

Just do it man...

Only question the shop. that is what I paid for my incorrectly installed pinion bearing eating installation too...

do the 4:10 with an auto 3.73 with a stick thats my take on it. Auto robs a bit of power and you can make it up with the gear

Okay, so I'm pretty firm on getting 4:10's.
Will I NEED to adjust the shift points?
They do change the speedo gear...but
I'm afraid of hitting the limiter.
It won't be that big a deal, I like shifting myself when I'm racing anyway.

Joe, when you crunch the numbers, you'll see that the RPM difference at 60-70 MPH isnt all that great between the two gear choices.

If you crunch numbers of get input from the guys (regarding the highest cruise speed you see on the highway and the RPM's they are turning) and it is ok with you, I'd do the 4.10's. I only have 3.55's which I do kinda like for the highway (at 65, I'm at about 2200-2300 RPM or so, IIRC).

Overall, I think there's a bigger chance of being disappointed with 3.73's than 4.10's. And the 90s that Poka mentioned could work, though it's not a Ford gear (since a shop is installing, the set-up not really your problem).

Oh, you made a good point about limiter smacking - I'd really want to hammer that down first. I have read of some folks having reported an issue with it, while others didnt. That would kinda suck if it happened.

I have 3.73s and 4.10 might have been a better option for me, considering I want to stick to the stock 302 for a while.

I would get 4.10s especially with an auto.

i think most people prefer the FMS gearsets for a reason. and i dont think their is a speedo gear for 3.90 either which means a speedcal to keep things accurate

I would say before you decide on the gear check out the shop a little bit. That sounds like a really good price you don't want to sacrafice a quality install for a good deal when it comes to gear. With that said an auto vert should probably have 4.10's But then again what are your future plans? Are you going to eventually build it up into a big hp and tq car in which case with that 4.10's may not be needed.

Na, probably not. The car is not going to go much further, I'm about to go to college and won't have time/money for anything. I wont even be able to drive freshman year

only $370 for installation w/ the gears included? I think thats a pretty good deal, lowest quote i got was $300 for just labor. Im only 40mins away from pottstown...i think i may jump on this . Synned where do you live?
