Infamous 3.73's or 4.10 question

Ok i know everyone asks this question but here's my situation. I take my car to track once maybe twice a year. I really was leaning towards the 3.73's but after reading some reviews that some people wish they would of went with 3.90's or 4.10's. I drive 15 min to school a day one way but my gf live 2 hours away and I go to see her every other weekend or so. So therefore I want something that is not going to kill me on gas when cruising but i definitely want some more giddy-up. What are the rpm levels for 4.10's vs 3.73 at 75 or so. Any opinions appreciated

go with the 3.73's if u gotta drive 2 hours every other week or so

3.73's or 3.90's.

4.10's are great for the track but if you don't go that often then they arent worth the extra RPM on the highway. Plus traction on the street goes downhill.

Being the fact that you have a 2000 GT (as do I), we both have the T-45 transmission which doesn't have quite as deep 5th gear as the T-3650's, so we tach a little higher on the highways.

60mph is around 2100 RPM for me.

70mph is about 2500 or so.

80mph is 3k even.


3.73's arent a bad gear at all, and the 3.90's are a great compromise.

i do a crap load of highway driving and love my 3.73's for it. I think 4.10's would be too much rpm. But (i know this is a bad way of looking at it) it all depends on how long you "think" you too will be dating. Or if she moves closer. I mean you may decide on the 3.73's and then all of a sudden you two break up than you'll be like shat i should have gotten 4.10's. Sorry i'm not saying i wish that on you just some insight.

as everyone has been saying this is why i have been leaning towards the 3.73's plus it gets cold here in the winter and my traction will be really bad

I've taken 1000 + mile road trips with my 4.10s doing 80-85 MPH for extended periods.

Did I mention I averaged 25 MPG even through the mountains?


My exhaust is also not exactly quiet.

Pretty much the same here.

I went on a 6 hour trip one way, mostly interstate speeds around 80mph and got 25mpg.

Exhaust was so loud I was pretty much yelling at my GF the whole trip to communicate...

i commute over 1 hour everday with 4.10s. No problems, love them. I can't imagine going with 3.73s. I'm usually between 65-75mph , lane changes or quick reactions are a breeze with 4.10s in the freeway

I have a 20K mile a year daily driver GT...I LOVE my 3:73's, they are just right for everyday driving...maybe not optimal for racing, but IMHO, the prefect gears for a street car

I hate to come in as the downer here, but with the gas prices tbe way they are now and the fact that you tend to do a good portion of highway driving, I'd leave the 3.27's right where they are and look for alternative ways to improve torque and efficiency.

Aluminum drive shaft/flywheel, underdrive pulleys, electric waterpump, weight reduction. Anything ot take some of the workload off the engine.

I wouldn't give a damn about the gas mileage; save a few dollars elsewhere.
I bought my 3.73's when I lived on Long Island and had to drive in ice and snow.
I can highly recommend them.
4.10's? Maybe now that I will never see snow but I do not regret the 3.73's.

Gears are a #1 mod needed for 4.6L fun. You will love them as you love your own mama.

I have 4.10s in my GT. I drove her from Texas to California when I moved in January. I drive her 40 miles each day to school. I do occasionally see some track time with her. She does have a small shot of nitrous. That being said, i wish I had 3.73's. Especially with the power adder.

my mileage improved by a little when I switched to 3:73...I consistently get 10-20 more miles per tankful

I guessing it's from getting into 5th gear more often, and driving by in the same RPM range on the highway it's pushing less air 'cause I'm going a little bit slower

I'd recommend 3.73's as well. Even on the track the 4.10's aren't much better. I think gas mileage in town actually improved for me with 3.73's and highway mileage is still good if I keep near the speed limit.

+1 on the 3.90 route

its good for people who are hesitant on getting 4.10's when they know they have long drives they need to make in their car. of course 3.73s would be better than 390 for the noise but if you want more gear, 390 is a nice middle ground.

im getting 4.10's. only because mine isnt a daily driver and it sees a lot of track time. if it were a daily driver id go with the 3.73's or even the 3.90's.
