Install Motor without a hoist?

I'll just inject the sage wisdom of my neighbor looking at me working under my car with a floor jack: "Use jack stands buddy -- you can turn a good time into a bad time real fast without them." The same goes for engine hoists. Dent your car body using a homemade rig, drop your engine on the floor or worst of all, on yourself or a buddy, and you will truly have turned a good time into a bad time real fast. Jeezus K. Reist, it costs $50 to fill it up now, and you're gonna worry about dropping a C-note on a hoist? You can surely get most of it back reselling it. And if you can't find one to borrow free or rent for $25, you're living in the wrong neighborhood. Hell, I got mine free then gave it away because it was taking up too much space.

I thought he was hybridizing Crazy Pete and MacGyver . :)

Dude, when you're a poor college kid with a thirsty car and the t-5 just blew up and you're utterly strapped for cash and you have to work in a garage so small you cant even open the cardoors that's at the bottom of a hill 180 degrees around the corner from the the like 30 grade slope of a driveway (5 point turn with no trans...oooh fun), you start to get real creative with your methods.

Sometimes, a little twine, some chewing gum and an angry midget with tourettes ziptied to a skateboard can go a long way. =P

I have learned to respect the sheer robustness of these engines simply by them surviving all my antics. These 302's can take a beating.

My favorite was using the family toyota to push the disabled mustang in reverse (it was blocking the turn around spot) UP the driveway...using a breaker bar on the lugnuts to "push" the car. Using 5 scissors jacks to lift an AOD, 1 corner at a time. Pouring silicone in the oil (this actually did quite well). Hooking up the AOD shifter backwards (rods and cables have reverse action it occured to me later) and starting the AOD'ed car for the first time in low gear on ramps...... swapping a k-member with the motor in the car teethering on scissors jacks and the rest sitting on 2 2-ton floor jacks...Pushing the tail of the car a few feet to one side on the 2-ton jack castors (needed more room to get the axleshaft out).

and it still runs well! Wow. Now thats a durable american car!

Thanks for the props! ;)

PS mcguyver was like my favorite show back in the days...brought a tear to my eye.

Pete, when I thought it could not get better....... (And I am glad you took my comments jokingly, as intended. You have some funny stories). :nice:

I would not be worried about how strong a 302 may or may not be, but how you have not been seriously hurt.

And wasnt Pete actually the name of Mac's boss? Great show.

If your car is carbed and has no O2 sensors to destroy.....spray some silicone down the bore and go to start it. You'll be amazed. The engine is almost free spinning with all the lube. This will roast your O2's I hear.

I poured a few capfulls in the oil just to see what would happen and it seemed to free rev a little easier. It was near an oilchange and motor flush and I decided not to have silicone baked onto the inside of my motor but it was more or less a success for the day or two it was in there.

I like to put my fingers in the intake and pick up the engine from there... I use my other hand so I can balance myself because when putting the engine in with one hand you get sort of tipsy at times. Of course I am 7'4" and weigh 456lbs and have less than 20% body fat :D

haha no but seriously if you can't afford to rent anything, how are you going to pay for fuel once the engine is in?

Although I don't recommend it, I have heard of people buying engine hoists at Costco on Friday and returning them on Monday because they were "defective" and getting their money back.I have used the come-a-long method many times as a friend of mine had a steel beam and trolley system on the roof of their garage which worked well.I tried pulling out a motor once using a beam between a couple of the rafters in another garage but that ended as soon as I started hearing them cracking. My garage has 3-2x12's side by side over the big door which would be plenty strong to pull a motor but I would still probably put in a couple of support poles on either side of the car.You could also ask on the Stangnet regional board if anyone in your area has one you could borrow.I now have one which I built and I have lent it out a couple of times to locals.
