I installed my Ford Racing axleback last night. Installation was pretty easy and only took me about an hour to finish. And man this thing sounds mean now and the tips are a lot nicer than the stock ones. I do have a question though. It sounds a little raspy, especially from 2300 to 2600 rpms or so, it sounds like a ricer on steroids. I'm assuming this is because of the o/r h-pipe? Is there anything I can do besides replacing the h-pipe with one that has hi-flo cats? It's not horrible, and it really sounds great through the rest of the rpm range but I'm not big on the raspy noise i get with lower rpms. Thanks in advance for your input.

I have the same axle back system but dont have any other pipe mods and there is hardly any rasp...might want to check for leaks but not sure if that would cause rasp or not. Mine were a little raspy at first but I noticed that they were not as tight as they could have been and after I retightened the clamps it went away.

Well, I had the same thing with my 2000 model with the off road x-pipe. The problem with mine was the mufflers. I got used to it. I had spent to much already on mufflers. My 2003 with the same set up had stock mufflers and had no raspy or air type sound. I agree that the more chambered the muffler the the less it will sound like that.

The raspy sound near 2500 rpm is from your o/r H pipe. I've had the same problem. Switching to a chambered muffler won't help; the tone is still there whether using a Bassani kit or the stockers. You probably won't be able to fully eliminate the sound, unless you go back to the catted H. And not necessary an aftermarket "hi flow" catted system; there have been numerous people on other sites that have documented this problem even with hi-flow cats and chambered mufflers.

The raspy sound in NOT from the H-Pipe. It's from the 3V engine. I've spent an insane amount of money trying to eliminate the "trumpet" note which occurs at 2500 RPM. I had the Flowies, Mac, and now I have the JBA Evols. The first two mufflers sounded awesome with the o/r H-Pipe except when the RPM's hit the 2500 mark. The only way to get rid of this annoying note is to (like someone mentioned) buy a chambered muffler. I found the JBA's quieted down the trumpeting note quite considerably. Deep tone at normal driving and loud as heck at WOT. If you do decide to go with the JBA's, let them break in for at least 2000 miles, they will get louder over time. Mine are getting louder every week. Hope this helps everyone with this problem.

Yeah, it's from the 3v engine; that explains why its not raspy with the stock cats but is raspy without. Sure, a chambered muffler will fix it; that's why my Bassanis sounded raspy with it and so does the stockers. Hey, I bet that when the off-road H is removed the 2500 rpm raspiness goes away, with either the Bassanis or stockers: yep sure does. Wow, that 3v engine really knows the difference between the o/r H and the stock H; with the o/r its raspy and with the stock its not. That's a smart engine.

You're right about spending a bunch of money trying different mufflers, yet you've only "quieted down" the note considerably. Aren't the JBA's chambered too? And they didn't eliminate it?

LOL, yep you sure know what you're talking about If you put your stockers on with your stock cats, listen closely, you can still hear the "rasp" at 2500 RPM. You know what??? Why don't you email Brent at brenspeed.com and ask him yourself and when you hear the response he gives you, you'll feel like you just stuck your foot in your mouth. Know your facts before you other people's opinion or advice.

I'm not flaming you man, don't take anything personally as your experience matters and so does mine; that's what these forums are for. To say that the sound is from the 3v engine seems pretty far fetched. I've never heard any of the rasp or trumpets with the stock H and stock mufflers; infact I never heard it with the Bassanis and the stock H either. I don't remember ever reading about anyone posting anywhere about the trumpeting with the stock exhaust. It's always been related to when the stock catted H was removed.

Oh and about Brenspeed: yes I know Brent, infact I've dyno tuned with him since his shop is only an hour from my house and he's currently using the dyno at Dyno-Tech Engineering until his new shop is open and his dyno is installed. So, no foot in mouth here, my friend .

I had the same issue when I put a O/R H pipe on with a flowmaster axle-back. The rasp was bad enough that I had to make a decision, go back to the stock h-pipe which was not loud enough or try a prochamber. I took the chance and bought the prochamber and man what a difference. The "trumpeting" effect was greatly reduced and the sound while quiter than the o/r h is much deeper. Overall I'm happy with the results. For what its worth I don't think the problem is with the 3v engine, but with the muffler placement. We have almost no tail pipes so its like running with dumps. A friend had a '97 Cobra that he ran with Flows, O/R H-Pipe, and no tail pipes. It was hella loud, raspy, and had the "trumpets", the difference when the tail pipes were added was night and day in a good way.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I think I am going to probably stick with what I have now. I love the sound and I can live the the raspy noise at 2500 rpm. In fact, if I drive it fast enough and shift higher up then my rpms won't fall back below 2500 Anyways, I actually haven't had the chance to let a friend drive it so I could stand outside and listen to it take off. I'd rather do that before I start making any decisions, but most likely am not going to change anything, I'm trying to save for a supercharger!

how can teh sound be from the 3V? its still 1 exhuast valve just like before? the difference is like Dan02gt said, muffler placement, it gives teh car more of a GM sound as opposed to a mustang sound becuase the muffler is after axle with little tailpipe like previous models. i bet you if you stick a muffle under the floor boards of the car it will sound like previous stangs...

I'll find out soon enough and let you know......in about 3 weeks I should be installing the Cervinis side exhaust kit which has a decent amount of "tailpipe" after the Magnapack mufflers. I'm curious to see how it sounds with the offroad H and hope that it will reduce or eliminate the trumpeting.

The 3v may have a little to do with the sound difference but I bet the muffler positioning is a big deal. There is an article about it in the Dec. 05 MM & FF. I believe they attributed tailpipe length as the main factor, but I could be wrong, I'll have to reread that article when I get a chance.

Fast,

Which Ford Racing axleback's did you install? FRPP's catalog has two axelback's to choose from -- the M-5230-GTA and M-5230-5GT. I've read that both are made by Borla with the cylindical ones (M-5230-5GT) as being the deeper/throatier sounding set.

I may get flamed for my opinion. but I have the flows with the stock H. It sounds like a coffee can to me. No clue why it sounds like this. The opinions here sound good. Muffler placement is probably a big factor. I've had a '98 Gt with flows, an '02 GT with Ravins, an '03 Marauder with Ravins, and '04 Marauder with Ravins and an .04 MACH 1 with magnaflows (Have also had a '66 Fairlane with 289 and bullett glasspacks and a '79 Trans Am with a 455 Olds and Glasspacks). None of then had the coffee can sound. I'm considering putting the stockers back on. Not as loud, but at least you get some tone without the raspy sound - and drone.

Guess I'm getting old.

EDIT: 3-4-06 - Drove the '05 today. Perfect day for driving. Car sounds alot better when its sunny an 68 degrees outside

So, if I installed the FRPP mufflers, but kept the stock H-pipe and cats, would I have the raspy sound?

I just ordered the FRPP axle back today and plan on running it with the stock H. Everybody I've talked to seems to be more concerned with drone than rasp on these mufflers, at least thats with the borla stingers which is the one I got. From the couple sound clips I've heard it sounds really deep without any rasp but I haven't heard them in person yet. I'll let you know when they come in. Oh yea, my car has to come in too.
