I think maybe this is my 1st real post here, but I have been reading on it for a while now. I have gotten many of my questions answered just from going over the forum, so thanks!

Anyway, a buddy and myself installed some FRPP 3.73 gears into my '01 GT yesterday, and I love them. I made my decision to go w/ 3.73's just from what I've read here, and I am not dissapointed. The take off is awesome compared to the 3.27's, and because my RPMs are up more quickly, the car sounds a lot louder. So far I have a set of FRPP C Springs, drop in K&N filter, Mach 1 Chin Spoiler, 3.73 gears, Flows, 275 40 17 tires. Next up is getting more air into the engine...75mm plenum/throttle body combo, headers, Densecharger CAI, pullies, but not sure which order. Thanks again fellas...it was nice to see the heads turn last night on Westhiemer here in Houston when those pipes roared out.

Congrats on the install. How long did it take you to install the gears? I thought about trying to do mine myself, but might have to get a shop to do it.

My buddy is a licensed mechanic, so he did most of the work. All in all it took about 5 hrs. He had the torque wrenches, air comp, pneumatic drives, and I supplied the rest of the tools. If it wasn't for him I would have paid to do it.

When you installed them did you have to set the backlash? I used to have a Z28 and IROC and the Chevy's require you to set the rear's backlash and something else. If not this should be a driveway changeable item. Thanks.

Nope. No adjustment required. Just pulled out the oversize 3.27s, and installed the 3.73s. We did all the work in my garage.

Cool! That's great to hear! I'll be doing my switch-over from 3.27s to 3.73s in just less than three weeks. I'll be having a shop do them but I'll do the Speed Cal myself. Are you an auto or a 5-speed? I would assume a 5-speed...

Just curious, how is 1st gear now? I decided not to go with the 4.10 for a couple reasons, one is that I do drive long (fast) trips now and then to other states. And my car is my daily driver. After that comes either a Tri-Ax or a Pro-5 shifter.

Hey! I recently did 3.73's in my 1998 vert and I love them! They are not too high or too low, and give plently of pull (especially over the stock gears)! I also have the Triax and I love it! Sounds like we have similar taste! First gear is not too low, but it is much different than before the gear swap!

Tx01, im curious on how you just "swapped" them in without them whining or anything. Im not trying to knock your friends knowlege but I know that if gears are installed and not set right, they will whine and wear prematurely. Just wondering.

I have a 97 GT (auto). All I've heard is that since it's an auto and mostly stock, 410's are the only way to go. Does everyone agree??

I did the 3.73 swap in my 96 5 speed. It does really wake it up. Now I just cruise around in 2nd and 3rd and when you need some extra juice it's there. I had a mechanic friend of mine help me do my swap in my garage as well. You really should set the backlash to between .08 and .12 on a dial gauge. if you don't have it right it can cause problems. If it wasn't right you should know it by now. It would hollow like crazy. Also be careful for the first few days just to break the gear in. Don't go hammering it too much right away. The gears can be brittle until they get some repeated heat in them to harden them up. Take it for a good 1/2 hour cruise where you have to do a lot of up and down shifting. That will help break it in. The only thing I find is that it does take more fuel now. Makes sense, keeping the engine at higher rpm, but it is so worth it. Have fun!

I still get the same gas mileage as I did with the 3.27's, so if that is a factor then you won't have much to worry about. The rpms are reasonable on the freeway as long as you don't want to cruise 90+.

That's a good question, but I can't answer it. I will see him tomorrow, and I'll im though. Now as far as just "swapped" keep in mind I was the tool getter/flashlight technician. lol. Anyway I have not experience any whining, or problems. It actually is no different from the stockers as far as the feel.

These 3.73s rock I'll say that. The 1st drive was a surprise to me because I was not used to them.

Gotcha man, Im sure he knew what he was doing, I just dont want you to mess your rear end up and have to do it all over again. I cant wait for some new gears, but cant decide between the 4.10 or 3.73...here we go again

I haven't had a chance to "look" at my car with 4.10's but a guy I work with said when I left work he thought I was going to pull the front wheels off the ground. I love the way 4.10's "look".

I would go with 4.30's or 4.56 for the Cobra if you want to get your moneys worth. Those cars really make some power at the upper rpms.
