Installing Supercharger yourself

Hey guys, got the mother of all questions. Is it wicked hard to put in a supercharger yourself? I've read on stangnet that some people can do it and some people recommend getting it done by a speed shop. I talked to a kid who did it himself and he said it wasn't that hard it took him a day and directions were pretty straight forward. The only hard part is tapping the oilpan. It would cost me over a grand to get it done at a speedshop. I was wondering to see if i could maybe do it myself or with the help of someone, then get it dyno tuned, which will run me about $600.

yeah thats what this kid said, it was just bolt on's and re-locating parts. I might just give this same kid like 200 bucks to give me a hand. I mean he is still running it and hasn't even gotten it tuned yet. Speed shops charge alot because they know they can. But i'm just wondering installing it myself and then getting a dyno tune by the speed shop, it would save me like $400

I'm also curious. I will be installing mine by myself within 2 weeks. The only hard part looks like tapping the oil pan. Installing the fuel pump also looks like a pain in the ass. The rest looks pretty much straight forward just bolting on.

You could always get a procharger or a kenne-belle and not worry about having to tap into the oil pan. I rather install a supercharger myself than do long tubes myself. Installing a s/c shouldn't be to bad to do. I've never totally done it myself, but I've taken s/c's off of cars to get a new belt on or to change the bracketry that was warped.Wasn't to bad but we had 2 sets of hands doing it.

There's nothing to it. I've installed prochargers (pain in the ass but not "hard"), vortechs, and paxtons with the vortechs and paxtons being the easier to install by far. Tapping the oil pan is something that's made a big deal of but in reality once you do it there's nothing to it. Just make sure you have the proper tools and take your time.

What tools do you basically need to tap the oil pan? Thats the only thing i see being hard and a little scary. The rest of the stuff he said was just bolt on and brackets.

Center punch, 5/8" tapered punch, and a 3/8" NPT tap

yea my lazy is is reinstalling my vortech now that i have the "correct and necessary" parts to do the job. the instructions are really straight forward. the only thing i recommend is to to the whole job in one day. i usually work on it a little at a time and forget what step i left off at the day before. good luck

i have no idea how hard it is and what not but from working on cars i can say get a digital camera and take pictures every once in a while just in case you are unsure of something later

Yeah i'll probably set aside a nice weekend and have at it. I do want to get it, and install it before summers up, but i'm not going to rush it. I think i have a solid plan of installing it myself or with the help of someone else, then getting it dyno tuned. Another question how is installing fuel pumps on 01 GT's?

Thanks...I was wondering what size punch and tap to use. I will post up how my install goes and let everyone know how easy it probably is.

The kid is right. You are really just changing some parts. The fuel pump isn't a big deal as you just take some bolts off and it will drop down. Just make sure it is near empty when you begin.

Also, take you car to a speed shop and have them tap the pan before you start then you are way ahead of the game. That is the way I did mine and it only cost me $50 to have the pan tapped which is less than the cost of the tools to do it.

I bought my kit from T&J performance so I just shipped my computer and when I got it back the tune was dead nuts on.

There really isn't much you can screw up installing it yourself. Just take your time and double check everything.

Vortech has a great set of installation instructions. It seems pretty straight foreward to me.

Just get a Mongoose kit if your going with Vortech. Tim will get ya everything, including a solid tune, that you need to get up and running with out worrying about driving an untuned vehicle around. DO NOT get the full vortech kit. Thier fuel pump is crap and thier tune is useless. Install is easy.. just take your time and do a good clean job on it and you won't have any problems. Tapping the oil pan only SEEMS hard because you're making a permanent change to the oil pan. It'll take a few minutes with the right tools and thats about it. Paying 1000 dollars for that is rediculous.

Thanks Guys i got the answer i wanted to hear. I'm just wondering if the speed shop that i talked to will do the oil pan tapping for a decent price. I would even pay up to 100 probably.
