IRS(Track Manners and Times)

I'm looking to install a IRS in my fox coupe. I was wondering with you SVT guys how your IRS suspension hold up at the dragstrip/roadcourse with the right parts?I would like to know what kind of upgrades you people recommend to throw as much hp as I can at it and still hold up. I was also wondering how hard you can launch them when properly setup and what kind of times can you get with them?

I've heard these work well for keeping the IRS together. I haven't had the chance to try it out for myself, though. Worth checking out anyway.

What are you SVT guys getting as far as hp rating out of your stock units? Without breakage of course.

Depends. I've seen reports of guys busting a half shaft on a stock Terminator, yet there are some guys out there pulling 1.6 sec 60 foot times with 500+RWHP on a stock IRS. A lot of it depends on how much wheel hop there is. Here is a good article on how to beef up the IRS so it will support big HP.

What kind of bushings should I run? So, with about 2grand worth of upgrades I can launch it how hard at the track? As hard as I want or am I still going to have wheel hop problems?

HOw are you Svt guys doing competitively on a road course? Can you beat out the guys that have a properly setup solid axles? How do you hold up with the abuse of a road course?

The only Stangnet '03 Cobra owner with IRS who regularly road races their car is "TheDukeOfEarl". Maybe he'll pop in and give you some better info. I know that setting the IRS up for running the twisties and setting it up for drag racing requires different approaches.

Here is what Griggs has to say about the Mustang and IRS:

The IRS is a handling improvement over stock, but definitely not over the GR40 live-axle system in terms of performance. The IRS does yield an excellent boulevard ride, but if it is a track car we don’t recommend the IRS as there are many issues that we could discuss on the phone, such as wheel well encroachment (tire size limits), axle hop, high differential temperatures (cost), CV joint cycle time, (cost) weight and others but too many to mention here.

If you would like to make this switch we have several take out IRS systems that we could blueprint for you. We can also build you a custom GR40 hybrid live axle w/ TorqueArm and Panhard or Watts Link to your specs. the advantages of this system in a track driven car are many. You will never be able to drive at the limit all day long with the IRS, like you can the GR40 live-axle system and the long term operating cost is significantly less.

My opinion is to stay away from the IRS if you plan on using the car at the track."

I'd stick with what you have.

Thanks man. Thats a real bummer thought I had it figured out with the whole IRS swap. I guess I'll stay with the MM solid axle setup I have now.
