is coolant drainage necessary for temperature sender removal?

With a cold engine, nary a drop, just did both of mine about a month ago. This applies to the water temp guage sending unit as well as the water temp sensor that sends a signal to the ECM

What temp sensor is the one that sends the info to the ECM??? The sensor that is on the top of the 2 black metal heater core lines is shot on my car, is this one important, I need a new one? Whats it called? Is it just called the coolant temp sensor or is it different then the one in the lower intake manifold? Thanks didnt mean to steal the thread.

it's called the ECT (engine coolant temp), if the connector is broke, might as well get a new one...should be around $10-$12
