why would i have det. with 14* timing?

I had some detination on my 331 at 15* but only above 80mph on the freeway when i would really hammer it. that was what they set it at when it was last tuned and dyno'd. i backed it down to 14 which i thought should fix it and drove it again, and it still did it. i just backed it down to 13. whats the deal. most people can easily get away with 14-16 or more and i have to be at 13. i always run 93 octane and usually try to use a 104 octane booster with each tank. WTF???

I also have the same problem. Most of my detonation comes in at the end of 3rd gear after a looong pull at the track. I suspect the fuel pump so come spring i have a 190 going in.

yeah after having spent all that money on the 331, id hate to have something go wrong. just can't figure out what it is though. it shouldn't be the pump, the fuel pressure is set at 46 psi, it wasn't running lean on the dyno, and the rest of the way through the power band it seems fine. 13* just sounds too retarded too me. it pisses me off when i hear people say they are running 16*. lol

Yeah, but those "people" with their timing bumped to 16* probably have stock compression 302's/306's. I would rather be in your position with the 10:1 331 with 13* timing; whiner :D

both very good points!!! what can i say? i guess im just a big whiner!!!

still though, it is frustrating :bang:

i am sure you know how it is. no matter what you have, it just never seems like enough. there is always more you could do, someone quicker, someone faster, someone with more money.........blah blah blah.

then maybe i shouldn't say "at only 13*, it just doesn't feel strong enough" huh?? you probably wouldn't feel much sympathy for me huh???

Your compression has a lot to do with it. Do you run the AC when it is pinging? AC adds heat and load to the motor.

Try running 2 range colder spark plugs. See how that works. Also you run a little more fuel to keep the detonation away.

actually it even did it without the a/c on earlier.

i am running 3924 plugs (1 range colder) now. i guess ill try the 3923's. should i keep it at 13? i guess if the 23's work then i could bump it until it pings again huh?

thanks hllon4whls, i appreciate the input.

does the 104 octane booster really even do anything? I run 17-18* with no pinging on 91 octane.

honestly i dont know. i guess i should have said i try to run a bottle whenever possible because i did notice some difference though so i figured it could only help.

Just giving you a hard time man. Let us know if running colder plugs helps.
