Is it possible to smoke the tires in 3rd gear?

How much power does it take for our cars to smoke the tires on a 2-3 shift on decent street tires? Who can do this and what kind of power adder do you have?

Mine will do it easily on a shift. I can even feel mine breaking loose at WOT near 5000rpms in 3rd. That is kind of scary!

Neal (Slapper) who comes out to BM sometimes can break them loose in all 5 gears....its fu*king sick.... He is pushing 560rwhp though

hmmm... Thats interesting... I can bearly break the tires in second. Thats from like a 2,000 rpm start... Im like totally in love with my nitto drags now... It pulls like freaking crazy and about 4500 rpms you feel all kinds of squirly...

okay okay yeah if you have gobs of power sure you can. Is it possible with an S-trim with 8lbs of boost? Can it be done with a Kenne Bell at 6psi?

who gives a crap, my car with 246 would spin into 3rd gear on the street. That means nothing

Now with nittos if they are hot will hook up in first, if cold spin some in 2nd.

again spinning = bad

I agree, if you want to spin that bad, throw some narrow little civic tires on the back. You could probably spin into 4th. Dont worry about spinning, if you are not then its better for you but if you are, you know you have more things to buy.

Besides, its safer. I would be scared of the feeling of getting sideways or close to it going 60-70 mph...if not faster

he beat me too it

snoozer brought up a good point. you could put some cheap thin tires on there and spin all the time. When you put some decent wide tires on there and spin that means you have power... power that isn't going to the ground though... I personally don't like to do anything harsh in 3rd myself... that is the problem gear in the T-5 and im still going on my stock one...

i can chirp third hard on my goodyear daily driver tires (245/40/17) easily, if i spun second up to about 6g and dumped it into third im pretty sure i could smoke third gear... but i bought the nittos so that would never happen now

What about doing a burnout in 3rd gear at the track? What kind of power would be needed for that?

I was spinning tire at WOT in 3rd gear, at low RPM's to....on nitto DR's.. Then boom and bye bye HG! Tomorrow im getting it tuned though, so we will see what gears i can break the tires loose in for sure..

WOW! 4:30 gears with a 5-speed? That's hardcore. Do you have a 2.95 1st gear?

Well, I used to be able to to chirp third with my old tires. 315's put a stop to that! Now I can barely spin in first.....and I love it!

It's not so much power as it is gearing. A 4.30 would do a 3rd gear burnout, a 4.10 might. I've tried it with my 3.73s and it will turn the tires over a few times and then the rev's get killed. My car doesn't have enough ass to spin 'em in 3rd. Torque spins the tires. The steeper the gear, the easier it becomes.

Its all about the clutch, In a stock 95 I was able to chrip the hell outta first second and third after putting a Duel Centerforce Clutch. but after putting 4.10s in that car it would bark 4th.

Duel Centerforce Clutches are the ****s, use too I loose ground shifting on that ****ty ass 10.5, now when I grab a gear the car lunges out and dont loose any RPMs.

I agree with some of the above mentioned people...I think it would be better to have tires that can handle the power and make you faster rather than showbaoting with wheel spin...that is borderline ricer mentality...it is about actually having the power not making people think that you have it!!

I am sure you all have seen the Lingenfelter video. That guy was not a ricer and he was smoking his street tires in third gear at will. With a pair of DR's he wouldn't have that problem. I wouldn't call it rice if you had the power to do so. Civic tires in the rear is rice. Smoking in third because you have the torque means you need more traction. Since when does that mean you are a ricer?

Depends on tires and pavement.. I can usually spin going into 3rd but tires are already smoking fron 1st and 2nd... now if your talking about being and third gear and just nailing it my 331 wont do it but my 410ci in my 92 will light them up doing 80 on the freeway. Power is useless if you cant get it down to the ground but it sure can intimidate the ppl who dont know any better.
