Is it Really a 351C?

Take a good look at the front engine cover, the 351c is unique, the oil dipstick is in the very front, on the left hand side facing you, the water outlet on top of the intake manifold is in the center and looks different than others. If you can, pull off one of the valve covers and get the cyl. head casting numbers. This will tell you if the heads are the small combustion chambers or the large ones.

I take it you're new to Mustangs or Fords for that matter. 351W engines have the dipstick in the front also. All engines in these cars have a front sump oil pan unless it has been modified. And what D.Hearne said. 351C has a 4 or 2 cast on the top corner of the head that indicates whether it's a 4V or 2V head. It's visible without removing the rocker cover. You do need the numbers to determine if a 4V is a closed chamber or open and what year of head.

My 351w's dipstick is on the drivers(right) side of the block, about where the #6 piston/con rod would be near.

It's a W motor.

I had to leave before seeing the posts about the valve cover bolt patterns, and didn't count them. The upper hose does come out of the manifold, though, for sure.
